Funtimes Posed a Puzzle

Members Only

Funtimes posed a puzzle in his outrageous comments blog that was kind of fun.  This is a takeoff on that except that the code or key is backwards.  That is Z is 1, Y is 2, and so on down to A is 26.  Also any legitimate American English or English English word can be used.  The word does not need to be adversely related to work place performance.  Those would be permitted, but not required.

The idea is to find a word that maximizes the sum of the numbers corresponding to the letters in the word using the code above.

Limit the number of letters to less than or equal to 20 please.

I took a day off for skinny dipping and got my ass beat up by a lady?

Let me defeat your top score by "archaeometallurgical" = 355 :)

Can I kindly get my bragging rights back? :)

Neither Reading or Math are my fav subjects. I prefer skinny dipping...lol

@Rmac22 - She has defeated my 10 word score. CHACHALACA = 229 ...hmm Now thats a tough one to beat.

Yes you can brag.  Thanks for catching that.

BANGIACEAE = 222 ^^

CHACHALACA = 229

Congratulations.  You are now in the lead for the 20 or fewer letters for ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHIC = 350  I amended my remark and removed pushing on.  You are also in the lead for the 10 or less letters with CHACHALACA = 229.  Sorry I missed it.  Of course just above funtimes takes back the lead for the 20 or fewer letters.

Thank you, it is fun having you participting.  .

funtimes still has the record for 10 or fewer letters with:

10 Letter word, "Bareheaded" = 217

I checked it and it is legit per my dictionaries.

You are close though.  Considerably better than my last best.

Just for your info though his last best and currently the record for 20 or fewer letters is:

20 letter word, "antiparliamentarians" = 325

Thank you

ADDIS-ABABA  26+23+23+18+8+26+25+26+25+26=226

10 Letters :)

I checked it concatenated and Word thinks it is fine and google splits it into two words.  So it is sort of a qualified win at this point.  Try to find one less subject to protest.  Let's leave out hyphenated words.  Opens up all sorts of stuff otherwise.

Twenty or under might have more room.  And, it may be that this puzzle is maxed out.  Someone who has memorized the entire dictionary might know.  I may pose another puzzle.  One on pure reasoning.

Thanks, I am glad to see you and your participation.

rmac = You should modify your blog everytime there is a top score for 1 to 20 letter word and list them there along with who posted it. This way people don't have to scroll through pages.

Abracadabra is impossible to beat because its the only 11 letter word in English where the letter "A" has been used 5 times along with B and C. Yes, I memorized the dictonary once :)

12 letter word, "taramasalata" = 219
5 letter word, "Kabaa" = 119
4 Letter word, "abba" = 102

You do know you won the 20 or under and the 10 or under letters competitions as of this date don’t you?  Those were the only competitions in contention.  All references otherwise were just discussion.  I agree listing who was ahead at each days end would be good.  I tried to keep up with that along with fooling around with the competition myself.

I am no longer clear on the objective of this game anymore.

Originally the objective was to find max result for 1 letter word and then to 2 letter word to 3 letter word and so on based on the rule of A= 26 and so on.

Now its max score with minimal number of letters used.

Too much back and forth. I am going back to my European Vacation again :)

Have a good time on your vacation.  I only specified a limit of 10 and 20.  I did that because we needed bounds and restrictions.

Sorry you think it has been going back and forth.

@ funtimes

very good.  By the way Gentlebreeze owns the record for an 11 letter word with abracadabra yielding 245 so the 14

and under class would belong to her.  Similarly your 16 and under word would beat your 17 and under and 18 and under words as well.

I had to delete some of mine and possibly some others as they had gotten corrupted.  Apparently mixed entries of text and tables are unstable.  Check to see if you lost any.  So katharinewithanA is back in the lead for 20 or fewer letters with a score of 249.  She only used 18.  funtimes is in the lead for 10 or fewer letters with a score of 217.  He used all ten letters.

rmac22 - Did I win the trophy?

No, just limited bragging rights which you have already used up with, "yeah baby yeah! lol"

I have limited the number of letters to 20 which is 2 more than the max anyone has used sans you, of course.  Single spaced vertically that thing went into the second page.  You can brag all you want about that one.  It was a word consisting of a bunch of concatenated words concerned with a disease caused by breathing a particular type of volcanic ash.

Even google had a hard time finding it.

@ Gentlebreeze

I am afraid you and I set the bar too high.  No one else wants to play.  I did it by using a long word.  Yours was clever.

Get enough letters in the word and it will add up even if they are not all clustered at the front of the alphabet.

Mary Poppins word comes to mind.  Since that is not a real word, don't think it counts.

@ funtimes,

I checked.  It is a word.

Try to see if you can beat the 10 letters or less record which currently is 202.

So far Gentlebreeze is the leader at 11 letters and likely up many letters with a 245 total.

katharinewithanA has the unlimited lead with a score of  249 and the ten or less letters lead at 202

My ten or less score of 197 is good but no cigar.
