Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a provocative term that is vitally important to dating. The first question people ask is, "What is it?" My simple definition is the following:
"The ability to IDENTIFY and MANAGE emotions...your own emotions and the emotions of others."
Now there are several layers of complexity to it. For example, "self awareness" is foundational.

Thank you for contributing to the discussion. I agree with you. Part of the strategy in developing a high EI is trying to move toward win-win solutions and not make everything a competition. The EI theory I adopt is one that have four hierarchical levels, which each level requiring a higher skill set. - Kevin

- RockinRobin - Thank you for contributing to the discussion. You make a good point. It is very easy to slip into trying to manipulate, rather manage their emotions. Ex. Using known trigger words is manipulative. Avoiding them is not

Emotional intelligence, to me, does not include trying to manage other people's emotions! Unless they are children to be guided, that is manipulative. I only work at feeling, then managing my own. I feel other people's emotions and manage how I react to them. It's up to the other person to manage their emotions and responses. You be you, I'll be me. Ps- I'm new to this site. The blogs and interactive conversations are such a high caliber! Thank you for giving me opportunity to think about how I feel on this topic!!!!

I am a detox and adult psych nurse. Much of our EI is based in brain chemistry, structure and function. Also hormonal balances as we all know interact and can be a root cause of poor emotional control and other mental health issues. Holistic psychiatry is wonderful, when you are able to find one who will do labs to check everything. For example thyroid imbalance can cause depression. Amygdulary dysfunction of course is a primary root cause of bipolar disorder. I would love it, also, if psych Drs would start using MR Spectroscopy in order to look at brain function. As well as CT scans. Of course I am not making excuses for all whom have low EI. Honestly. There are many ways in which we are able to work on emotional intelligence. Patience and empathy, emotional regulation, and so many other things related to EI can be improved by "putting in the work". CBT is a perfect example! Anyway this is a topic that could be discussed for hours! Thank you for the blog and conversation starter! It's an important topic for those of us putting ourselves out there to hopefully find a life partner!

- Thank you for all great questions. Yes, I think the amygdala can be reframed. I am by nature sn eternal optimist and I believe there is hope and help for everyone.

Like what you wrote and your thoughts. Emotional intelligence comes by going through the chapters in life. Some has to go through same chapter a few times until lesson learned. Emotional intelligence leads to purpose of life.
