Conversations about company culture is something that happens more and more these days. With sprouting companies in Silicon Valley, employees are clocking endless hours to create the next big thing. So, when you have a company that encourages taking vacations it’s normal to raise a brow in excitement and maybe even confusion. Dustin Moskovitz, co-founder and CEO of Asana, believes that less work is more productive. MillionaireMatch got the scoop on this internet entrepreneur’s way of living.
Moskovitz is known for co-founding one of the world’s biggest disruptors, Facebook. He knows all too well about early mornings and late nights. He recalled not getting out much during that time. Since exiting Facebook in 2008, Moskovitz launched Asana, a web and mobile application to help teams track their work. With over 200 employees, it’s no easy task to create the right culture but Moskovitz has been successful. “We have employees who are really happy, engaged and productive,” he said. “From the beginning we were very intentional about how we built the culture. We were very reflective. We saw things that needed improvement, and we would put our focus there,” he explained. Moskovitz also has his hand on diversity, incorporating visiting historically black colleges and speaking at inclusion events. "I think in a lot of companies the issues don't get addressed until the wheels are about to fall off. You have to address them or the company’s going to blow up," he said explaining how at Asana they try to stay ahead of it.
Not only do they stay ahead, but they begin creating a culture of work-life balance from the time new employees come onboard. The provided workshops, coaching, and peer mentors help their new team members transition into a work environment that they may not be used to. "We are probably one of the only cultures where your manager will say, “hey you haven't taken a vacation, and kinda push you out the door," Moskovitz said. He encourages walks and even sabbaticals to help employees not get burnt out and to re-inspire creativity. "You have to think about those times to recharge," he said.
Taking time out must be working. In 2016, Asana had a valuation of $600 million according to TechCrunch. The company has also seen rapid growth in users, topping around 20,000 this summer. The same tools that built Asana also built Facebook, so there’s no surprise as to why the platform has been a success. One might take a look at the unique dual leadership at Asana with Moskovitz sharing final decision making with co-founder Justin Rosenstein. “We definitely complement each other’s skill set,” Moskovitz said. And if that isn’t enough, Moskovitz had one other key thing that makes Asana a great place to work. “Transparency by default is one of our values,” he said about keeping employees in the loop on acquisitions and possible changes that may happen in the company.

The fashion industry had a rough year in 2016, but according to the McKinsey Fashion Global Index the industry continues to grow. With designers like Philipp Plein, the fashion industry will be worth $2.4 trillion. Plein, a self-taught designer, has alway put his focused on the product. MillionaireMatch got the scoop on how Plein went from law school to fashion legend.
Like many, Plein was too afraid to take the leap into a creative industry. As the son to a doctor, Plein decided to take the stable route by pursuing law. He wasn’t able to override the crave to be creative and soon found himself in the basement of his parent’s home designing. First, Plein started with furniture and later handbags. Without any formal training, he worked tirelessly. “It was tough. You have to be really self-confident,” he described his early years. “I didn’t have any clue or idea. I wasn’t working for a fashion house or big group. I’m an independent label. Being independent has it’s advantages and disadvantages, especially in the beginning. I built something out of nothing. So, in the beginning people didn’t believe in me and what I was doing. They never heard of me,” he said.
Soon that would not be the case. Lots of hard work, attention to the detail of his product, and creating pieces that are different allowed Plein to stand out. “I was really afraid no one would show up at my first show. Nobody knew who I was,” Plein said. His first show was in Milan, an evening show which is a non-peak time during fashion week. Plein decided to include an after-party which is something he still does. It was a huge success and brought visibility to his brand. “It’s important to me that people have fun. Fashion is fun,” said Plein.
“In the beginning, there was no strategy,” Plein said about building his brand. “It’s really tough nowadays to create a fashion brand. It’s a tough business. In order to be a success, you have to perform,” he explained about producing products that stand out. “Our slogan is we are born to be different,” said Plein.
He shared a few tips for those aspiring to take over the fashion world in their own special way. “I wasn’t able to pay a big salary in the beginning. The people I hired were not professionals. They didn’t come from the industry. We learned by doing,” he said encouragingly. “You will make a lot of mistakes along the way. As long as you do more things right than mistakes, you keep on surviving,” he continued. He also said that when he first started he would ask for money upfront for his products. He learned that in the furniture business. “When you are a young designer, and you put all your money into your collection and going to trade shows for exposure, you need the money. If people don’t pay you, how can you survive?” he said.
A long ways from collecting money, Plein has put his focus on retail stores. Philipp Plein stores are around the world from Beverly Hills to Amsterdam. Plein doesn’t seem like he will be slowing down anytime soon with building his fashion empire. “You have to dream, and continue dreaming. The dream keeps you going. This is the motivation,” he said.

Basketball Wives is back and so is one of the original cast members. Jennifer Williams is coming back. Williams was a cast member for the Miami show, and will now be joining Tami Roman and Evelyn Lozada in Los Angeles. She’s has had a few ups and downs during the years, but Williams is ready to show a new and improved version of herself. MillionaireMatch got the scoop on the season 7.
“When I was on basketball wives miami, I felt like I was going through two divorces. One with my husband, and one with my best friend,” Williams said regarding her marriage to Eric Williams and her friendship with Evelyn Lozada, also a cast member of Basketball Wives. Williams admits to being closed off before, but now she really wants people to get to know her. “I’m vulnerable and real,” she said. Since leaving the Miami show, Williams had a few other moments on television including the show The Next 15. On this show, she may have been a bit more open but found herself going head to head with Claudia Jordan.
After divorcing in 2010, Williams dated Tim Norman from the show Sweetie Pie’s. It started out promising. She was even on Sweetie Pie’s looking very happy with Norman. Now, she comes back to Basketball Wives dealing with the end of that relationship which turned legal. Williams has had to get a restraining order against Norman for allegedly stalking her. “Since I’ve been away, my goal was to find healing and self peace,” she said. “I never thought I would be back on television dealing with another bad situation,” Williams said regarding her break up.
Most people question why she would put herself back into the circle of friends and backstabbers. Williams said she feels a sense of sisterhood. “We argue, fight and love each other,” she said. We’ve seen a lot of that throughout the years, but we are curious to see how that old way of doing things matches up with the new and improved Williams. How will the old team mesh with the new women on the show? That’s what we can’t wait to see.
This will be the seventh season for the Los Angeles show, and they have added new key players to the cast. Ogom “OG” Chijindu, CeCe Gutierrez and Kristen Scott will make their debut and join the gang. Chijindu sounds as if she has her head on straight. We’ll see if any of the drama gets to her. Gutierrez admits to living her life outside of the limelight as a registered nurse. Scott says she knows she has to work on controlling what comes out of her mouth, and she doesn’t do well with fake people. From the looks of it, they are bringing a bit of spice with them.

The season has changed and many are pulling out their fall clothes and packing away summer. This time of year also brings out the fashionistas as they head to some of the biggest fashion shows from New York to Paris. Alexander Wang took over New York this September with his creative execution of a runway. We wanted to know how this young designer got his start to becoming a fashion icon. MillionaireMatch got the scoop.
“I think a lot of people look at me, and look at my age and immediately have this perception of the brand,” Wang said. Wang took the risk of starting his line when he was only a sophomore student at Parsons School of Design. “It was at this moment where I felt I was ready for a new challenge,” he said about deciding to leave school. His intuition told him to take the leap and it was right.
A San Francisco native, Wang was later offered a job to work with Diane von Fürstenberg at the age of 20. He said no, because of his commitment to his own label, Alexander Wang. “The best thing about my job is being able to create something and then seeing someone on the street wearing my clothes or bag,” he said.
For his New York Fashion Week 2018 show, Wang decided to do pop-up shows, which he called #WangFest, around the city of New York. The former creative director of Balenciaga said about his line, “There’s always some sort of irony.” Wang enjoys mixing hard looks with softness, and other peculiar touches. “The inspiration process is very organic. It’s always a reaction and a dialogue with everyone that I am working with,” he said. “It’s always to tell a story and to build a connection with the customer, and an audience. I think if you don’t have those two things, it isn’t worth it,” he explained.
Wang also says about his creative process, “There always has to be a reference to something.” He admits his love for sportswear and music and how it influences his work. At this year’s show, Cardi B. was one of the musical performers which seemed to take the crowd’s excitement through the roof. One tip he shared for younger designers, “Never feel like you have figured it out. You always have to be prepared for change and for something to go wrong.” There are times pieces need to be changed just hours before the big show. There are times he experienced changes with the venue or set design. Wang is always ready. “It’s a lot of hard work and a lot of behind the scenes,” he said about the things the public doesn’t get to see.
Women’s wear was Wang’s first venture, but since his 2005 start he has added menswear and accessories. Sometimes our customer is a lot older,” he said. “It’s much less about me and more about the brand,” Wang proclaimed.

The sweetest thing you could do for yourself is create the life that you want. Lisa Sugar, co-creator of PopSugar, did just that. Working as an advertising executive, Sugar was craving to create content as a writer. That passion lead her to launching one of the most popular women’s sites on health, lifestyle, beauty and celebrity news.
“I finally felt wise enough to share some advice,” she said regarding her book Power Your Happy. The mom of three who also runs the company with her husband has a lot she can share to entrepreneurs looking to take the leap. While trying to land her foot into entertainment, she realized that it wasn’t an easy thing. Advertising would fill the void temporarily, but she knew she didn’t want to do in her 30s. Sugar then moved to San Francisco, but soon found that she didn’t want to write about technology. Any chance she could get whether before or after work and even on her lunch break, she started writing posts for PopSugar.
After a year of writing, the site had a million unique impressions. Sugar knew that this was not just a site, but a business. Women could read, “Anything from a political stance to buying new shoes.” The power couple grew the brand while growing the team. What women loved about the site was, “We have been fan friendly since day one.” No celebrity gossip on this site, which also helped Sugar land interviews with stars like Beyonce.
The Sugar couple is seen as a rarity. A couple that works together and successful have a happy life, just isn’t celebrated as much. “I never intended to work with my husband. I never thought we would work together, but we do,” she said. Even though people see them as a power she simply thinks they are, “People who lift each other up.” She advised, “It’s important to surround yourself around people that you are going to learn from.”
The staff at PopSugar is 75% women. Though celebrity news is always a hot topic the most popular vertical on the site now is health. They’ve evolved with the times to include lots of video content. “You have to be faster, stronger and better everyday,” she said regarding competition. “We talk to our audience and editors about being more clever about stories and angles,” Sugar added. She has been lucky to find the right team to keep them ahead of the other media sites out there. “The combination of finding great people who are passionate about finding things first, building those relationships with brands and talent,” said Sugar.
One bit of sweet advice Sugar offered for those who may be on the path like herself, trying to do their passion as a job. “You can find yourself in a job where you are not inspired,” she said. “If you don’t want your bosses job you may be in the wrong place,” said Sugar. This may lead you to finally taking the leap on your own dreams.
