An interesting study by Hancock, Toma, and Ellison (see: The Truth about Lying in Online Dating Profiles, 2007) found that 9/10 people lie about their profile.  The number one lie is weight followed by height and then age.  What online lies have you experienced or discovered once you met them?

I think if it's 9/10 people lying in their profiles online it's probably about the same for peple you meet in bars offline (notably after a drink)! The verification process on here is a really good idea, but, as mentioned if someone really wants to lie they can fake their ID.

The only real way to test if someone is genuine is to get to know them and weigh up  whether or not they are consistent. As the adage goes "Telling the truth means never having to remember anything."

But if you feel insecure,it's better if you don't lie cause the true is only way out of insecurity. Someone out there is waiting for you and nobody wants to live with your lies.We have to understand each other.

Why do I have to lie someone? What can I loose if I say the true?

Of my last 4 dates, all 4 women lied about their age.

Edit: Make that 5 out of 5.

In this day and age people, especially those seeking relationships avoid any rejections. No one likes them. But then no one likes liars. These folks will do anything to be accepted. The media, and today's fashion have truly daunted the word beauty. They feel beauty is NOT skin deep but whatever else it would take to make them (how society has defined) beautiful. To each his own and I accept and respect these people. But lying about something you do not have or wish you had is really unacceptable. I think we should refresh our minds to that as beauty being skin deep. Just as an FYI (for your info) today's average woman wears a size 14 dress and the average man wears a size 44. Accepting everyone by the way they are is the idealistic world we could live in.

I find the people who lie about their profiles are the same people who will lie to you in real life!

I too, sent my DL in to MM. WHY they didn't verify age, I don't know!!

MTSUNNY is correct though. A good scammer falsifies documents... So do NOT feel just B/C someone is "Verified," they are all they claim to be. UNFORTUNATELY, VERIFICATION ISN'T FULL PROOF!

Quoting suzi2012:

Well my profile speaks the truth and I am verified both pic and age.
Within two days of joining this site I was contacted by a scammer who I sussed. For this reason alone worthwile showing to others you are not a fake or trying to deceive them in any way.
I cant understand how others dont just send a copy of their passport so easy, unless thay do have something to hide.
My worst experiance of this was once arranging to meet a guy and his pic being 10 years out of date I didnt recognise him.............he had developed a large pot belly. Looks arent everything but being honest is.

hi Suzi, do you block everything except date of birth and image on passport? I am very cautious on giving my info online after losing my id years ago my credit report just popped up someone open a business with my info. as well leased a apt. I am trying to get that removed and get some investigation done. I would hate to have that happen again by sending a copy of my passport to a website especially when is no work related.

I just got back from a trip to visit a guy in Florida that was so kind and so awesome when talking with me on the phone.  Turns out he's not so awesome in real life.  Yes, he had a gorgeous house, gorgeous cars and a boat...but he was 53 not 44, and his his neice? Actually his daughter.  He was also texting and calling other girls from the site while I was sitting beside him.  This all came out only on the last day when I finally accepted that my suspicions were true and confronted him.  It was very disappointing, but can't say I'm totally surprised.  It amazes me that some people are so good at lying and barely bat an eyelid as they come up with a million excuses.  Ugggh.  It sucks because I like to think the best of people, especially when they have been kind to me.  So yeah, just be careful. I actually think he almost had himself convinced that he was 10 years younger.
I've also "dated" a  man who ended up having a live-in fiance and was also seeing another woman at the same time and his ultimate plan was  to have us all live together in his idea of heaven in a penthouse in Vancouver.  WTF?

Yes, don't fall to a scammers, they use the platform of all the dating site as a business.
I had a bad experience before...and learn a great deal that there is large group of Negerian dating
scammers hire Australian accent white man & Nigerian pretend of the person in the photos they stole
from facebook or any public site. the red flag is they have suspicious phone #, scan & email to you the passport or fake gov't document so easy...n making all the stories they have financial trouble of buying gemstones, auction, tax bond, parent ill, young widow etc. just be very careful out there. just go w/your guts...don't get scam.

Very interesting and  and the same time very discouraging.  What has happened to honesty and integrity?

With all of that being said....is it big enough to discourage someone from using the internet? I created my profile a short while ago but am a little skeptical. Never done the online thing before.

It is not so much the lies I have encountered ( which I have) but more about the cause and effect from lies of others that trickle down to my profile.

I probably loose a large percentage of men because I am unwilling to be interrogated about the integrity of my profile.
