I think I'd prefer Costa Rica. It is as beautiful and I believe alot more stable. I think in Panama you are still dealing with the drug lords and corrupt government. Costa Rica is protected by the US.

True Sharp and thats why the price of real estate has sky rocketed in Costa Rica over the past few years. When that happens people start to look elsewhere to maximize ROI. What ever money you invest in Costa Rica will control quite a bit more assets in Panama. MHO. It's only a hop skip and a jump across the border. The drug problems are east of the canal and adjacent to Columbia. Believe it or not SW Nicaragua is also starting to develop. That would still be a little too aggressive for me. LOL.

I think I would stay away from Nicaragua. I knew a guy who ran a big security company there(1500 guards). He said they would kill his guards for the $100 pistol they were carrying on duty. Every business had to be guarded, and all moderately rich people too. This was about 5 years ago, so may be some better now.

Susieinvegas, I think you are on your way to healing lol. You mentioned your ex without taking a cheap (but meaningful) shot at him. Good job. It does get better and it is soooo frustrating because you feel so much anger yet you can't say anything for too long before people start calling you bitter. And you want to scream "but he hurt me so much, do you know all the hateful things he did." But you can't because although you haven't had time to heal, everyone else has and they've moved on.

So good for you, by hanging on to those awful emotions just allows the other person to hurt you more...

OK, OK. He did say it was a pretty place and that the people were friendly. Apparently the young ones really like to party also.

Panama sounds wonderful by both descriptions!

Before the hurricane, they'd even made Bilouxi, MS a "destination". We were stationed there (long ago, far away) and it was the most dreadful place I remember living growing up.

A millionaire friend of mine just went to Panama?? What am I missing here? Is this the latest spot to buy real estate?? My ex-husband was stationed in Panama in 1989 when he was in the Army. This was not a vacation spot. Am I missing the latest real estate craze?

I would say you hit the nail on the head. Last year when I was visiting Costa Rica I managed to spend a few days in Boquete, Panama. Conde Naste (sp)Magazine called it one of the best places in the world for Americans to retire. It's up in the mountains not far from David so the climate is very temperate. It reminded me a lot of Marin Valley, CA. I met a lot of Americans who were buying land or building there. They use U.S. currency, their roads are good (we built them) and the people were very friendly. It's still very cheap. A great steak was about $6USD. A very nice hotel $80USD per night. A little too much military (their military not ours) visible for my taste. I met a guy from FL. who ended up buying a fishing resort, selling everything he owned here and moving his entire family down there. It was in Boca de Toro on the Caribbean side in western Panama. A place called Careening Cay Resort. The pic. is from their web page. I would like to return to Panama and do some more exploration. Anyone want to plan a get together there. Count me in
