.. the one person who can explain to me why:
There is NOT ONE Starbucks in Holland!

I REALLY want to know the reason.
You can go about anywhere in the world and you'll find one, but not here!

We might be walking on wooden shoes, have lots of tulips in our gardens and houses, all live in windmills and get together every now and then to stick our finger in a dike but... WE ALSO DRINK COFFEE!

Anyone has a clue?

@Goodlife
Indeed, Germany is packed with Starbucks. So is France by the way...
Not to mention the UK!

Guess the Dutch and the Belgians always want things their own way ;-)

@Robtest
Well, yeah... part of the 'oh we Dutch are so liberal and we legalize marijuana so all tourists get completely wasted and drive or walk into the canals and drown' thingie.
(Guess my opinion about the softdrugs-policy shines through here a bit...Not a fan!)

You can smoke pot with your coffee. Who the hell needs Starbucks ??? :o)

Their marketing and research probably tells them that they can't compete with that!!!

I have a clue! I have a clue!

The Starbucks brand is very strict. Even though the stores are franchises, owned and operated by many different kinds of people with many different kinds of clientele, business owners find they have NO creative license when they sign up with the corporation. CORPORATE DOES NOT DEVIATE ON ANYTHING.

Therefore, some independent business owners find Starbucks (Corporate) very difficult to work with.

I dunno, perhaps the Starbucks model works well in . . . Germany?

There are other SB wannabee's here, who took the market. Tho not the way SB would have I think.
Apart from the fact that I do really like their fancy coffees, I am very curious about why they're not here.. or in Belgium for that matter!

Ever heard of the anti-globalisation campaign?
Long live the Dutch!

Perhaps you should start your own modern multi-culti Dutch coffee house, if you feel there is a market for it.

Aimee I think Grapes may be on to something! Sounds like that market is wide open, go for it girl! All you need is the recipes and the products.

Okay ladies, tx.
Learned something here.
Tho I do think it's strange that MacDonalds, KFC, BurgerKing etc. did manage to set foot here, simply cant believe SB couldn't find a way.
I thought it might have something to do with the fact we call the places where you can buy softdrugs here 'coffeeshops'.
I like the 'anti-globalisation-campaign' version better :-)

Is it perhaps because the Dutch are intelligent people who don't believe in succumbing to consumerism by paying exorbitant amounts of money for hot beverages and snacks with fancy names?

Couldn't agree more! Let's add that the coffee isn't that great either unless you cover it up with all sorts of things.

Frankly, I don't think you're missing a thing.

Ah darn!!
Just my luck to be the only one in this country who does believe in all that and would love to be able to order a fancy Marble Mocha Macchiato or a hot Cinnamon Spice Mocha.
