    "Discovery"

    Sometimes it takes
    a really beautiful day
    to wake us up
    to the wonders
    of the world around us.
A blossoming flower, a sunny sky-
sometimes these are the only things
    our eyes look for
    and value as worthwhile.
But there is so much more to life,
    so much more to enjoy,
if we can learn to see
    with our hearts
    as well as our eyes...
To be aware of each day,
    each experience,
as a separate wonder of its own,
    to meet each challenge eagerly
    and grasp each moment
    with a sense of newness
    and discovery-
    this is what living
    is really all about.

    "On Getting Older"

Lord, Thou knowest me better than I know myself, that I am growing older and will someday be old. Keep me from getting talkative, and particularly from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from craving to try to straighten out everbody's affairs.

Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details, and give me wings to get to the point. I ask for grace enough to listen to the tales of others; help me to endure them with patience, but seal my lips on my own aches and pains. They are increasing and my love of rehearsing them is increasing as the years go by. Teach me the glorious lesson that occassionally it is possible that I may be mistaken.

Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a saint - some of them are so hard to live with - but a sour old woman or man is one of the crowning works of the devil.

Make me thoughtful, but not moody; helpful, but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all; But Thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end.

    "Life Cycle"

I think that the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way, then live twenty years in an old age home. You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement.

You go to college...until you're ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a little kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating, and you finish off as a gleam in somebody's eye!

    "Acceptance"

Acceptance is the answer to all my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, or thing, or situation - some fact of my life - unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God's world by mistake. Unless I accept life completely on life's terms, I cannot be happy. I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to be changed in the world, as on what needs to be changed in me and my attitudes.

    "Another Day"

    Been driving through the night
I pull up and see the lights
This is the place that I call home
I watch you as you sleep
Think of all you mean to me
    Touch your face
    Kiss you softly
Before I go to sleep I pray under the stars
Search my soul and check my heart
    and thank God for

    Another day
Another chance to love the ones I love
    To find my way
    To laugh, to dance
    Watch the sun come up
Another day I get to live
    As if
Every breath could be the last I take
    I get another day

I've got a hand that I can hold
    Someone who knows my soul
A safe place to lay my head at night
    So why do I forget
How much I've been blessed in life
Forget what means the most to me
As I'm waking up again I feel my beating heart
So grateful that I've come this far
    and thank God for

    Another day
Another chance to love the ones I love
    To find my way
    To laugh, to dance
    Watch the sun come up
Another day I get to live
    As if
Every breath could be the last I take
    I get another day

    To make somebody smile
    Go the extra mile
Take a wrong and make it right
And try to touch somebody's life
    I get another day

    "Satisfaction"

As you look back on yesterday,
    may your memories be warm.
    As you enjoy today,
    may your heart be filled
    with happiness.
As you look ahead to tomorrow,
    may your fondest hopes
    and dreams come true.

    "Resolutions for Avoiding Misery"

Choose to love - rather than hate
Choose to smile - rather than frown
Choose to build - rather than destroy
Choose to persevere - rather than quit
Choose to praise - rather than gossip
Choose to heal - rather than wound
Choose to give - rather than take
Choose to act - rather than delay
Choose to forgive - rather than curse
Choose to pray - rather than despair

    "Time's Blessings"

    Count time by lovely memories,
    not by days and years-
    Count it by the handclasps
    the smiles and happy tears;
    Count it by contentment
    and daily tasks well done,
    By star-filled skies at evening
    and mornings warm with sun
    Count it by the friendships
    you've made along the way-
And by the many times that God
    has smiled upon your day.

    "Don't Quit"

    When things go wrong,
    as they sometimes will,
When the road you're traveling seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
    and you want to smile,
    but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is hard with its twists and turns,
as every one of us must learn,
and many a failure turns about
    when we might have won had we stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow
you might succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out,
the silver tint in the cloud of doubt-
and you never can tell how close you are,
    it may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight with your hardest hit,
it's when things seem their worst
    that you must not quit.

    "Dreams"

You know a dream is like a river
    Ever changing as it flows,
    And a dreamer's just like a ship
That must follow where it goes
Trying to learn from what's behind you,
And never knowing what's in store
Makes each day a constant battle
Just to stay between the shores.

Too many times we stand aside
And let the waters slip away,
'Til what we put off 'til tomorrow
    Has now become today,
So don't you sit upon the shoreline
    And say you're satisfied,
    Choose to chance the rapids
And dare to dance the tide.

    "To Touch the Wind"

    To pursue a dream
    is to touch the wind-
    to reach out
    and fly on the wings
    of the breeze
    to new horizons,
    never before seen,
    but often and lovingly imagined.
    To capture that spirit
    and keep it always alive
    in the heart
    is to know true fulfillment,
    for it brings every dream
    within reach!

    "Hope makes a difference"

Hope looks for the good in people instead of harping on the worst in them.
Hope opens doors where despair closes them.
Hope discovers what can be done, instead of grumbling about what cannot be done.
Hope draws its power from a deep trust in God and the basic goodness of mankind.
Hope "lights a candle", instead of "cursing the darkness".
Hope regards problems, small or large, as opportunities.
Hope cherishes no illusions, nor does it yield to cynicism.

    "The World's Greatest Need"

    A little more kindness and a little less greed;
    A little more giving and a little less need;
    A little more smile and a little less frown;
    A little less kicking a man when he's down;
    A little more "we" and a little less "I";
    A little more laughs and a little less cry;
    A little more flowers on the pathway of life;
And fewer on graves at the end of strife.

    "Hugs"

It's wondrous what a hug can do
A hug can cheer you when you're blue
A hug can say, "I love you so"
Or, "Gee, I hate to see you go."
A hug is "Welcome back again"
And "Great to see you, where've you been?"
A hug can soothe a small child's pain
And bring a rainbow after the rain.
The hug: There's just no doubt about it
We scarcely could survive without it.
A hug delights and warms and charms-
It must be why God gave us arms.
Hugs are great for Fathers and Mothers,
Sweet for sisters, swell for brothers
And chances are your favorite aunts
Love them more than potted plants.
Kittens crave them, puppies love them,
Heads of State are not above them.
A hug can break the language barrier
And make your travels so much merrier.
No need to fret about your store of them
The more you give, the more there's more of 'em,
So stretch those arms without delay
And give someone a hug today!

    Oatmeal Days...

It's not always the red-flag crisis days that are hardest to take. It's the "oatmeal days". The ordinary, "zero" days of little or no consequence. The ho-hum days filled with nothing of any particular interest. Colorless. Uninteresting. Unfascinating. Unspectacular. And unfun. The days everyone deals with.

We cope. We wend our way through the tangle of tedious activity and sandpaper people scattered through our day and get no applause, because coping is expected.

Not so during the red-flag crisis times. People tend to rally behind us with loving support. We're lifted above the crisis and enabled beyond human comprehension at times.

On oatmeal days, after a crisis has peaked, it may seem as if friends have forsaken us, as if God doesn't care. But the reality will be that life has merely pushed us and our friends one step further in the Christian growth-walk.

The God of the crisis times is the God of the oatmeal days, too. Because He said He is. Because He keeps His promises - always. Because we can't get along without Him. And because we wouldn't want to if we could.

    Don't Stop Dreaming...

Don't ever be reluctant to show your feelings when you're happy, give into it. Don't ever be afraid to make things better, you might be surprised at the results. Don't ever be threatened by the future, take life one day at a time. Don't feel guilty about the past, just learn from any mistakes you might have made! Don't ever feel that you are alone, there is always someone to reach out to. Don't ever forget that you can achieve so many of the things that you imagine. It's not as hard as it may seem. Don't ever stop loving, don't ever stop believing, and don't ever stop dreaming your dreams.
