Saw this topic and had to write. Have studied martial arts for 10 yrs. (jujutsu-akido-judo, also studied win chung and tan soo do). I am presently rehabing from a back surgery due to this hobby. I now have plenty of time and must say that the best thing I did was to join this site and learn about this forum. I have enjoyed reading the different forums and it has kept me entertained.

Hello Brad.

I have a 4th Dan Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. I've been training since 1986 and got my Black Belt in 1991. I love the workouts and I love commraderie of the other Black Belts that I work out with.

I teach children and adults. All Black Belts in our Dojang are required to teach..."the student becomes the teacher who becomes the student again".

I'm not into self-defense, but I lived in Okinawa,Japan AKA Ryuku Islands. I believe the martial arts that some people are talking about are from there. Miyagi is also a very big name in Okinawa. Just like in Karate Kid :)

Yes I train in Goju Ryu Karate Do at Canada Goju Dojo.
Our Grandmaster and founder was Chojun Miyagi (1888-1953) he began training at the age of 14, in karate under Grandmaster Kanryo Higaonna (1853-1915)
Karate is of benefit as physical training, as spiritual training as a self defence technique and as a cultural aid. It's true value lies in it's effect on the training of the physical abilities and in it's meaning as a spiritual discipline. For this very reason for being of karate and all other martial arts, judo, kendo, aikido, jujitsu...etc. At first one can be carried away by karate's demand for sheer valour, a type of enlightenment follows...this enlightenment is self-understanding, necessary in everything important in helping equal the odds in the battles to come. To win, a man/ woman must first overcome himself/ herself. WIthout self-knowledge, you will only arrive at frustration. With self-knowledge, you will learn to understand and value other people. The true karate master has a sense or propriety and a sense of humility which leads him/ her to his/ hers own sense of honour. Though it is true those who practice other martial arts may also attain enlightenment of these virtues. Such enlightenment is usually permitted only to the masters in given catagories. In the other martial arts many fail before one real master appears. In karate-do the number of failures is much smaller.
Remember to achieve enlightenment be true to your own feelings, endeavor to your true self for only you can experience and achieve this goal.
