underlying universal philosophies of all races/religion /culture are not that dissimilar..it is sometimes misinterpreted by bigots of this world who choose to use misinterpretations for their own private agenda that could ruin this world.
To me, becoming a powerful religious figure is about power, not about religion. I think we may have to begin licensing preachers, gurus, priests, and shaman. Then, when they loose their license in the local court for advocating murder, they can't preach nomo.
Bonnie" today it is the board of directors of the most powerful corporations in the world who truly govern the world...corporate power far outstrips political power most times"
Bonnie, just because you are cheep, cheep doesn't mean you always have to be wrong, wrong.
We have always had powerful corporations and rich men, since the industrial revolution. Economic power is indeed power, but as rich as Bill Gates is, he couldn't buy one aircraft carrier.
Further: Castro simply just took over Cuba, even though there were plenty of rich plantation owners, hotel and tourist businesses, owned by large corporations. Mao took over China. Iraq, etc. the list goes on. Political power and murder cannot be ignored, -- they can just nationalize everyone's assets.
Now, if I can ever market a bacteria and virus killer that is cheep, cheep, I may be able to take over the world. Who wouldn't want it. What power - agree with the corporation and you get to live. Much better than a software product or Wal Mart goods. I am having my friend/bio chemist whipping up a batch right now. Since she invented it, I am going to ask her to marry me. That should save me from those Asian women. lol Next we are going to work on longevity. That one will be simple.
wwwww123 write: Economic punishments by UN. Like they did to Iraq.
UN to establish values,
Smiles and smoking is not a value system consideration.
Culture be damned. There are things that are not acceptable to the world.
Uhm... wwwww.... I was just kidding about the smoking thing.... lol
To put it in a very simplistic way, I don't think the problems of this world will ever be solved. Or when one is solved, another will pop up somewhere.
And it's all about politics anyway. Who knows what secret deals go on behind closed doors. No politician is to be trusted, least of all GWB. There, I said it.
www. your Utopic wish is a pie in he sky...
The UN was established for this very reason to establish a fundamental set of ideals for political, socio-economic governance of the countries that were signatories to this assembly post WWII. HOwever, who is the police and administrator of the UN body..International organisations have a fundamental problem..the Lion of the tribe will continue to be the leader and the controller and guess who that is?
SEcurity Council of the UN ..who is to ensure that every signatory to the UN abide by their broad principles, remain to this day a weak body..the recent Iraq furore is a clear e.g....
Decisions made at the top are rarely followed thru and at the UN they only have persuasive powers and not real political sanctions and the power game comes into play constantly...true power resides in economic power , china has now become such a huge threat to the rest of the world in because of that reason alone, the yellow giant has had a taste of what free market and capitalism is all about..capitalism at its extreme is just as treacherous and insiduous r and the form of control is much more pervasive and invasive , Bill Gates in truth is a far more powerful man than George Bush ..today it is the board of directors of the most powerful corporations in the world who truly govern the world...corporate power far outstrips political power most times...trade embargoes, tariffs, are clear evidence of the worst kind of threat to free market practices...these are often instigated by politicians who are under pressure by the economic power bases of this world...USA politicians need huge funding before they could even contemplate running as a candidate..most times it is easy to become a pawn or a puppet in this game of politics..simply put...the hand that holds the purse string to the world governs it..fire power also means money power..politicians , corporate leaders are like baby nappies which need changing constantly for the same reason...

Yes but who would define the values and decide what is non-aggression, what constitutes terrorism exactly etc... and who would do the punishing?
And what form of punishment? You would have to choose different punishments for different countries according to their way of life and habits and what would hurt them most. Like prohibit smoking in all public areas in Greece - LOL. They'd go NUTS!!! Or force Parisians to SMILE all the time. They'd never survive! Or close all the bars and banish all alchoholic beverages in Ireland. Utter chaos!
Well OK the smoking thing would be valid in Italy, Spain, France, Germany - everywhere in Europe! And the drinking thing too....
Sorry - turned this into a joke....

TAgore , India's well known poet philosopher once said: 'The birth of the Nation marked the death of Mankind.'
the human race has not evolved that far from the animal kingdom , we remain primates and tribal in both thoughts and action. We mark our own territories...color, race, creed, class, political, religious...
Fundmentalist/fundamentalism- has been a much abused word, the dictionary definition 'strict adherence of tradition, foundation..principles.....
has been used now to mean and to be synonymous to the term 'Extremist or extremism'i.e. people who practise fanatical or political views...whether they be Christian or Muslim or any religious or political sect..extremism is different from Fundamentalists...
If all were fundamentalist then we return to the origins and foundation of all religion or political philosophy ..which I would surmise is all about GOOD values, love of our fewllow human beings as well as those lesser creed , civil social and familial conduct, tolerance and respect for others who are different from us..
'A little learning is a dangerous thing , drink deep not the Aerian Spring'...is a profound philosophy that all of us of any origin or background should understand and the more we are willing to learn about others , the more we will learn about ourselves...and the more we will realise that the underlying universal philosophies of all races/religion /culture are not that dissimilar..it is sometimes misinterpreted by bigots of this world who choose to use misinterpretations for their own private agenda that could ruin this world...WORDS in any language could be open to such a lot of abuse...hence i advocate learning the languages of as many countries...language is a much under-rated tool to peace in this world...
An example about Belgium and the language issue. (you should probably read my first post to see what I'm talking about):
I had an acquaintance once who was Flemish (Flemish is a language very similar to Dutch). He was telling me that he had a Walloon cousin to whom he was very close - they were like brothers, (being a Walloon, the cousin was French-speaking). They BOTH spoke French and Flemish fluently - however whenever they would get together they would speak English in order not to favour either French or Flemish, to avoid any possible tension that MIGHT be created by one of them not speaking his own language - so they preferred to speak a neutral language (English) even though it was a foreign language for both of them!! Incredible isn't it??
Both parties (the Flemish and the Walloons) are stubborn as hell when it comes to this. They will never find a way to compromise and accept each other's language peacefully.
But hey - the Belgians do make great beer, the BEST chocolate, and the best fries!! So I just ignore the politics and enjoy the nice things the country has to offer.
Face - oh boy - you really picked the prime example of a country where there is almost zero tolerance of anything or anybody non-Swiss!! I must admit, even though I am a very tolerant person myself and non-racist etc etc... the Swiss are my LEAST favorite people on this planet. I basically can't stand them except for just a handful of Swiss people whom I know and they are nice. Sorry Face if the father of your child is Swiss - don't want to offend YOU obviously. Their country is beautiful for sure and I would go there on holiday (esp the Italian side), but that's all.
wwww.... in order to promote good values and good character and more tolerance for other cultures, well obviously we'd have to understand the other cultures first and embrace them.
I think the Muslim fundamentalists are definitely giving their religion a bad name!! Islam does NOT condone violence of any sort. Yet that's what most people think.
It's mostly Religion and its fanatic followers that cause the problems. Look at the Protestants and Catholics in N. Ireland.
But there is also the Language issue in Belgium: the Flemish vs the Walloons. When I go to Belgium I have to be very careful NOT to speak French in the Flemish parts or I'll just get glared at or, at best, ignored! So I speak English if I want to get any kind of service! And I'm a foreigner there so one would think that they would make an exception - nope. And if a tourist happens to speak ONLY French then too bad - he or she will just get a steely stare or a rude remark from yet one more Flemish diehard "patriot".
Unfortunately I don't think we're anywhere near understanding and accepting each other's cultures, languages, religions etc... in a peaceful manner.
Sad but true. It just keeps getting worse! Too much nationalism and blind patriotism is never good in my eyes.
Good question... I think the only way to be able to eliminate racism is to explore other cultures and belief systems.
Coming from Canada, we are one of the few countries in the world that actually embraces multi culturalism, the government spends lots of money on promoting this.
I have been to countries that were very nationalistic and minorities were treated unfairly, whether it was based on reglious beliefs or by culture/ethnicity and I have to say that it was not a very postive experience.
One place that people may find interesting is Switzerland with the UN there in Geneva....I took my son to visit his father there on a few occasions, the second time I went -within 2 days of my arrival a letter came to me telling me to provide proof of my means and quite bluntly telling me that because I was of Canadian citizenship and my son was British that we would not be allowed to apply for refugee status! OK then I had to report to the local police station and provide them with evidence of funds for my 2 week visit and reply to their letter in either French, German or Italian (none of which I speak or can write)
The truth about Swizerland and their very nationalist ways hit home when I was approached by a little old Swiss woman who was talking to me in French and what I gathered by her gestures was that she could not believe this little carmel colored baby that I was breastfeeding was my own...lol
I realized that day that there is no mixing of ethnicities there. There is a 0 immigration policy in Switzerland also, they don't want forgeiners there unless you work for the UN. Even if you marry a Swiss it does not automatically give you the right to stay there either.
Sorry just venting a little...
But what I meant to say was that I believe the education we recieve here with regards to embracing muliculturalism works. We are a very tolerant society and most people respect others religions and ethnicity.
