Concurring with Bonnie, BHappy2, keep an open mind. I have also made some good friends on this site, male (platonic) & female. I did not imagine this happening, as like yourself I perceived it to be a dating site. But over time, playing on the forums, it allows you to get a feel for people. These friendships did not just happen, they evolved with interaction. It can evolve through interaction thru IM'g and emails too.
I would be leery about someone who just up front said "let's be friends", because it is too in my face ... friendships grow through time.
Everything good & worthwhile, takes time.

Thanks Bonnie and Sharp1, you have made some good points that I will keep in mind as I continue to explore this site and it members. It's just that typically I find myself giving people the benefit of the doubt, only to learned the hard way that it pays to be cautious. Yes, you could say that I am looking at the glass half empty, but besides jealously there are several reasons why platonic relationships are difficult to establish and maintain. The two biggest hurtles that I am finding are two way trust and open communications. Being new to the New Hampshire area, I am keeping the faith.

Agree with you Sharp that not many men know how to nurture platonic friendship with women especially here in UK where they are raised in single sex schools and boarding schools.. the men who do tend to be gay men...or those who have grown up with lots of sisters .
I find sometimes it is the married men who could be better platonic friends but then as a single woman I find it is difficult since I don't want their wives to misunderstand or to take too much of their time away from their families..
Single women become a threat to married women and their husbands.
I think we should start a thread on how to be platonic friends between the sexes..

I forgot about this thread after I last posted, just ran into it again. You're right Bonnie, married men can make great platonic friends, but it is limiting if you are not equally good friends with their wives, for the reasons you stated...jealousy, taking away from family time...all understandable. Most of my friends are couples. They have strong relationships, and the wives healthy doses of confidence in themselves. Those who were my friends in couples before, that have fallen by the way side when my separation occurred 4.5 yrs ago had their own problems, and possibility I became perceived as a threat, which is something many people told me would happen. If that was the case, they were not the 'true' friends I thought they were. New friends will always continue to enter our lives, when we are open to making them.

I do find that one needs to be very clear with men if it is a platonic friendship only. It might take reminding them, because they may hear your words, but continue to think they 'might' have a chance. So the stick around as a friend. Then one day if you do meet someone and begin dating...these other so-called platonic friends disappear.

Bhappy, don't be too cynical , I did find some great platonic male friends on this site. Keep an open mind, I think one could really choose ones friends and define the perimeter of that friendship and then let the organic aspect grow with time..stick around, let the unexpected surprise you.

Absolutely can never have too many friends. Ladies, I am also not a lesbian but would love to make True friends. Male and Female.

Does anyone know if this site actually holds any events so everyone can meet in person? That would be great!

I do actually have a few platonic male friendships of 25 yr. It's rare for opposite genders of the same age to make friends. Often one of the other wants to change things.
