Many years ago when I was a young lawyer travelling in Calgary with two other lady lawyers, we wanted to go out on a night with some nice local guys. So our host who was working in a bar went to ask his friends whether they fancy going out on a night with us but he made a mistake telling them we were lawyers..none of them wanted to go out on a blind date with us..so we landed up going out on our own..Why do men get intimidated by women who are in predominantly male oriented jobs or jobs that they perceive as powerful or threatening to their ego?
I think working on a navy base and having male employees trying to impress me with their war stories is an occupational hazard. Because every time they start talking about the way things were in 'Nam (especially if they are trying to impress me with the fact that they can still remember PART NUMBERS from 1963) I want to SHOOT MYSELF.
LOL reminded me of my first time on the back of a motorcyle...NEVER wear a loose shirt untucked...ALOT of people got a free show when we drove down a busy street, speeding up to get around some cars, when my shirt ended up almost over my head :)

The only other occupational hazards I encounter have to do with being in an industrial setting: Once I ruined a perfectly nice pair of stillettos on an iron beam. (Oh well, it was an excuse to go out and buy ten more pair!)
v. funny , you are right about setting. When I first had to go post the notice to arrest a ship, I ahd no idea how precarious the task was. Tittling on my high heels and a skirt, as I climbed the ladder up to the deck to post it on the mast, a gust blew my skirt up so high, all the sailors just stopped work , watched the whole ordeal I was struggling through and applauded my display!

Oh...as for friends...don't have friends in the law enforcement field...associates, maybe but no friends, weird considering the odds are for officers to be friends with other officers...
Most of my friends in computer fields, a few in retail/service...and a few in military
Men in male dominated fields mostly ARE threatened by women...see it all the time...
Have a strong work ethic but would love to be a stay at home wife/mother! If could AFFORD it...
Try being a cop...problems on the street or jails due to obvious reasons and from co-workers...and politics of the department...oh and lets no forget shots...tb screening every 6 months, whenever exposed to a pathogen have to be checked..and nothing like having to deal with bloody bodies, dead bodies or idiots that like to throw stuff at you not realizing who you are or when need to protect and serve...
Very frustrating more problems for co-workers and harrasment for being a woman...one of the reasons going back to school...going the judicial route now...
Love that joke too...saw it awhile go...and liked it even then...now just have to think of my co-workers and rank as one and it gives me a laugh ;)
I did not know where to put this one, so I thought I would stick it here. A friend of mine just emailed this to me:
>When you have an " I hate my job day", try this. On your way home from work stop at your pharmacy and purchase a rectal thermometer made by Johnson and Johnson (make sure you buy this brand). > >When you get home, lock your doors, draw the curtains and disconnect the phone so you will not be disturbed. Change into very comfortable clothing and lie down on your bed. Open the package and remove the thermometer. Now, carefully place it on the bedside table so it will not become broken or chipped. Take out the literature and read it carefully. > >You will notice that in small print there is a statement, "Every rectal thermometer made by Johnson and Johnson is personally tested". > >Now close your eyes and repeat out loud five times: "I am so glad I do not work for quality control at Johnson and Johnson." > >HAVE A NICE DAY AND REMEMBER, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE ELSE WITH A JOB THAT IS WORSE THAN YOURS.
I just stumbled across this and read it through. You made my day Blonde....LMAO
I dunno. I think it could depend a lot on who the test subject was. I'd work for nothing it was, eg Andie McDowell; and I'd PAY them if I could bring along my own experiments. [evil g]

I know it sounds simplistic but I sort of believe in the golden rule. Works for me..
good attitude to have..that we respect each other for what we do well and not be prejudiced by gender.
