If you think the worst thing Congress doesn't protect young people from is Mark Foley, then wake up and smell the burning planet. The ice caps are cracking, the coral reefs are bleaching, and our poisoned groundwater has turned spinach into a "side dish of mass destruction." Read the labels on your food. It turns out the healthiest thing you can put in your body is Mark Foley's penis. But that's America for you: a red herring culture, always scared by the wrong things. The fact is, there are a lot of creepy, middle-aged men out there lusting for your kids. They work for MTV, the pharmaceutical industry, McDonald's, Marlboro, and K Street. And recently, there's been a rash of strangers making their way onto school campuses and targeting your children for death. They're called military recruiters. More young Americans were crippled in Iraq last month than any month in the last two years. And the scandal is that Mark Foley wants to show them a good time before they go? When will our closeted gay congressmen learn, our boys aren't for pleasure, they're for cannon fodder? Why aren't Democrats and the media hammering away every day about who we're supposed to be fighting for over there, and what the plan is? Yes, Mark Foley was wrong to ask teenagers how long their penis was. But at least someone on Capitol Hill was asking questions. You know who else is grabbing your kids at too young an age? Merck, Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline. By convincing you that your kids are depressed, hyperactive or suffering from ADD. In the last decade, the number of children prescribed anti-psychotic drugs in America increased by over 400%. Which means either that our children are going insane-which we might look on as a problem-or more likely, we have, for profit, created a nation of little junkies. So, stop with the righteous indignation about predators. This whole country is trying to get inside your kid's pants, because that's where he keeps his wallet. I don't care if Mark Foley had been asking boys to describe their penis because I have some sad news for you: your kid is so larded out on Cheetohs and YooHoo, he can't even see his penis. So many of our kids are fat drug addicts nowadays, it's almost as if Rush Limbaugh had puppies! So we can pretend that the biggest threat to our children is some creep on the Internet, or we can admit it's us. Because when your son can't find France on a map, or touch his toes with his hands, or understand that the ads on TV are lying, including the one where the Marine turns into Lancelot- then the person fucking him...is you. Jess- Thanks for the comment. Too bad not all parents are so attentive. GuitarGirl- Good to hear from you :) Just for a bit of clarification (just in case), I can't take credit for this blog- it was all Bill Maher. I wish I could claim it though, lol.

wow, Not necessarily the nicest way to put it, but still rings true. Parents have to take charge of teaching and being a part of their childrens lives. Otherwise they are subject to be prey to others. I am different but the same when it comes to protecting my children and children of others. My daughter graduated Cum Latte, and is now attending college to become a teacher. My son is soon to be a Junior in high school and both have a solid foundation to the world and people in it. Both taught to deal with life rather than to run from it. Not being so big in their person as to not ask for help if they think it would give better understanding or somehow make working their problems out easier. Both have an awareness to human nature of people and how it effects their actions. They are never judgemental, but will voice concerns or issues. Both stand tall in their person and who and how they came to be.Both were quite popular in school and one still is, and he is dating a senior girl. They are both proud of me and are not afraid to let other people know who I am to them. And for that I will never deny who I am to them. Ultimately a parent sets the stage for you childrens future. Don't be naive to think that you can trust someone else to do this for you. To my kids do I give the most accolades. As they have overcome many aspects in their lives and grown to be productive and beautiful adults. Wow , neither swears, and my son still actively goes to church and maintains a christian attitude towards others and myself. He seeks to be a drummer in a christian band. He was in a rock band previously. he played on the football team, and is now in the band. And my daughter is always giving in of herself. It pays to be active and sharing in life with your kids as much as possible. Want the world to be a better place. Start at home.........and then share that with others...... Jess

Sepelo- Thanks. Just thought it'd be a nice change of pace. SouthernStarr- I agree with you. But you forgot to also mention parents who are indifferent. (Some) people these days aren't doing anything with their children. September- Thanks for stepping out for a second. It's good to hear from you :D

I feel the biggest threat starts in a home where there is a dis-functional family atmosphere...where the parents just are not active caring parents not involved....not aware...parents who have no time..or patience..to be pro active in their children's lives...sure there are predators out there...it is our duty to protect our children..to do this we have to be active in the parental up bringing...active in bringing up our children is an action statement...Parents in the Woodlands shove money at their children...and in essence tell them go play..I want my own life...so we are a community of wealth with children who are in nothing but trouble...drugs ..children getting cars much too early then having wrecks and dying...pain because of unmet needs...It is beyond sad.... And then again..there are those great wonderful parents...who deserve every bit of praise that one can offer... There are all kinds of dangers out there in the world...awareness is paramount..being there and being active is the key. Erica Anne @)----------

NativeNewYorker- I <3 Bill Maher. He makes good points (in my opinion). TONStigmata- that's true; a child's first education starts in the home.
