It's been visible for all of Aug. but supposedly should be viewed the size of the moon(by the naked eye,) on or around Aug. 26th. Won't be this close to the earth again for 20,000 years. Don't miss it! Tell kids, grandkids about this big onece-in-history event!

The thing about Mars appearing to be the size of the Moon seems to be an urban legend going around. It will be a brightish point of light if you know where to look. Mars is close to the Sun in the sky now, which means you will see it in twilight after the Sun sets until about 8:20 p.m., almost due West, about 17 degrees "to the right" and 4 degrees below the thin crescent Moon, when facing west. If you have hills or buildings to the West, the sky will probably still be too bright when it drops behind them. And if you're late and twilight is mostly over and you see a bright light to the SW, 25-30 dgrees above the horizons, that's Jupiter. And if you look 4 degrees "to the right" and 2 degrees down from Jupiter, you'll be looking at a patch of sky containing the New Horizons spacecraft, closing in on Jupiter for a gravity assist to Pluto. But it's too dim to see.

I've been looking forward to it all month long, UNTIL I read in a Cosmos website that this was NOT true. That Mars was nearest to the Earth in 2003, and that this is just a hoax. I do not know what to think. I guess it would not hurt to check and look at the sky on that date huh?
