Americans don't really care at least in my views.  First, most Americans are not into cycling, secondly doping (roids) in sports is as common as sugar in candy.  It would be my guess that a minimum 90% of the NFL uses roids.  If you look back 50 years you cans see that men never were able to grow as large or acquire so much muscle as now.  I've been into fitness for years and years...it is very clear to me that most of the muscular men seen on magazines use roids, some bulking some cutting steroids (probably both).

All anabolic/androgenic type steroids are derived from Testosterone.  Interesting enough, Testosterone is not considered a steroid but instead a male hormone.  Although I assume (have not checked) that Test is banned in Cycling.  All anabolic/androgenic steroids have similar action yet different types of roids can be used to aquire different gains. i.e. It is very doubtful that Lance would want to use a steroid for bulking, such a Tren.  He would use something like Anavar or even Equipoise (doubtful on the equip as it has a super long half-life which would show in testing, but would be good to reach his goals).  Virtually every steroid cycle includes Test as it's base.  German troops were some of the first to use steroids to improve muscle strength and aggression.  Later in the 1950's Russian athletes started using steroids which led to US athletes use of roids.

Pro-hormones have rather recently hit the market.  They are available OTC and aggressively marketed to young people.  These are precursors to steroids.  i.e. once ingested they will mix with enzymes to produce a steroid, although a much smaller amount than actual steroids.  The problem is that these are liver toxic and can produce the same sides as anabolic/androgenic steroids. (testicle atrophy, acne, fluid retention, aggression, depression, etc.)  People are using these unknowing of the danger.  The FDA has banded some of these pro-hormones.  Mark McGuire was one of the first to shine a spot light on pro-hormones.  One would think that since pro-hormones are readily available OTC that they would be safe.  But this is not the case as they can have the same sides as roids and can even be more dangerous (due to perception of safety, and more liver toxic).  Most people in the "Know" use post cycle treatment which brings back natural testosterone production.  Without the use of a PCT (Post Cycle Therapy), there can be psychological issues due to low hormone levels, such as lethargy, depression, suicidal tendencies, etc.

I am sure Lance used more than just steroids to reach his goals.  He probably used HGH, Peptides, injecting red blood cells coupled with the legal non-banned substances.  I wonder if Caffeine is banned (syn. or naturally occurring)?

World,
This saddens many across the world and reminds us how drugs can turn your life and those closest to you, upside down.  Is it worth it?
Another great brought down, Tiger Woods, not by drugs but by his choice of life style.  All a false front to the world that looks up to him, admires his talent and love for his dad.  Today, he is a has been, so much respect...lost.  Even some caddies don't want to work with him.  His reputation tarnished forever and a marriage with a beautiful wife and children...gone.   Was it worth it?
Many will replace them who will be a inspiration to the sports world, but these two, with a few others...their names will always be remembered in a negative light.  Was it worth it?
