I came across a video on you tube about a teenage girl named Amanda Todd who was bullied to such an extent  she moved away and changed schools. However, her bullies followed her, on Friday she committed suicide.

It made me think about the state of mind of some people within society. What is so wrong with people that they have the need to destroy the life of another individual?

I was shocked when reading the comments on the video. This was after she died. People writing sick comments saying she was easy, that they are glad she is dead, that they hope she burns. Ok yes the people writing them may be stupid bone head teens but to even write the sick comments... These teens will be our future society? Worrying??

I would love to see these people arrested who make such outrageous comments. To show the true cowards they really are.

I wonder about the teens who were involved in this bullying, are they remorseful in what they have contributed to? Do they care? I wonder what the parents think of their children? Its beyond disgusting.

It seems we are loosing the respect element within society. Not only respect but general compassion for one another. You only need to walk outside to hear parents swearing at their children and children shouting right back. Many parents do not know how to be parents. They have lost control. It is a big problem and will grow steadily worse as the generations go by.

However, despite the negativity we do have good within society. Those who are polite, considerate, helpful and who try to make a difference. We need more people like this. Parents need to be role models for their children. To set the example.

What are your thoughts?

I agree that the parents could have done a lot more to help this child. I don't quite understand why they would allow her to be on her own after prior suicide attempts orto have access to facebook after the bullying episode.  A sad and needless death.

Hoping, I agree with you... problems with self esteem start in the home.

The mother and father had failed their daughter miserably up to that point so there was no way they were going to stand up for her or take the proper steps to ensure her safety.

Even today, those parents are blaming the bullies and not taking responsibility for their failure as parents.

I completely agree with you Easy.

Hope - no need to apologize. You and I are on the same page here. God knows I will call a conference of world leaders if that will protect my child and keep him alive! How they allowed this to fester for that long and end in the suicide of the poor girl is beyond me. Similarly, in my legal and court experience of defending parents facing the loss of their children (who by the way are already victims of horrific abuse at the hands of another), I have seen some really shocking and incredulous parents, who will not protect their children! Some live in la la land and others are damn too self-centred to put their children's best interests first. To them it is too much of an effort, too much of a fight - Give up, move on and live another day! I have a word for them, but it is not printable!

I have not watched this video and I am not going to - I don't want to explode.

Liv.

I think they and their parents should be charged with manslaughter... any bullying or hazing that results in injury or death should be punishable with mandatory prison time.

Okay--that snaps my brain to attention.  And I think I have to agree. What a terrible torment our computer age has turned out to be for the weaker among us.

I don't know Sarah.  I just don't know.  My senses are actually deadened by this news and I have no idea how to respond.

I move on to others' comments in the hopes of those comments generating some clear thoughts for me.  This is just so utterly stunning, it's next to impossible to comprehend.

Quoting Hoping4Love2000:

Well our Sweet SARAH.. I watched it, and several other videos in correlation..

Of course my heart is breaking... :(

There are several entities to this tragedy...

First off.. WHY it began...

A young lady with self-esteem issues was coaxed into flashing someone online.. (Whether it was a an older man or not.. I am unclear.. No one is certain.. Personally, it appears it may have been a "school mate" posing as an older man, as this person had all types of info on her.. and a year later followed her)

WE AS PARENTS / GRANDPARENTS / AUNTS / UNCLES.. simply MUST express to our teenagers (and pre-teens) how INTRUSIVE and DANGEROUS the internet can be.. We must warn of predators and how they lurk and feast on the weak...

Secondly, when the bullying began.. I WANT TO KNOW WHERE THE ADULTS WERE HERE.. The police could not track the cyber stalker.. But where were her parents in all this? The video she made states she was in counseling, on meds, cutting etc.. Well, WHY THE HELL DID HER PARENTS ALLOW HER TO HAVE ACCESS TO FACEBOOK, LEAVING A HUGE WINDOW OPEN IN THE BULLYING? WHY did SHE and PARENTS allow others to TAG her with stuff? There are PRIVACY settings for a reason! Only my FRIENDS can tag me... and if I choose, I can make it so NO ONE can.. WHERE WAS PARENTAL SUPERVISION? I've had 3 children her age and I can damn sure tell you that if my child were cutting, drinking bleach, getting beat up and being bullied... I'd have put a lock on that computer and that Facebook account! And as a mother, I'd have marched my ass up to that school with my daughter at my side and stood up to all those children AND administration and said, "Yep, my daughter made a mistake.. I'm sure it won't be her last. " AND I'D HAVE BEEN SURE TO HAVE A LAUNDRY LIST WITH ME OF THE OTHER CHILDREN'S MISTAKES IN HAND AND ASKED "WHO WANTS THEIR DIRTY LAUNDRY TO BE REVEALED FIRST!"

Turns out, her mother works in the school system and knows computers... However, she still allowed her daughter to "play online" obviously being unmonitored if she was sending "boob shots" over net! It was said by her mother she was 12 when this started??? I made my ex put a chip in the computer.. Ssshhh... It sends all emails to a secondary email for review! And the kids never knew about it!! :) OH DON'T JUDGE ME FOR BEING A SPY!! I'd only read a diary if I thought something was wrong.. But predators don't lurk in a kids dairy... they lurk on the internet... and I worried more about that than I did being at someone's home I know. Nice they are grown and almost grown now! WHEW!! ~~~

There are some horrible acting children in society... TRUE!!!! But I FAULT THE PARENTS FOR ALLOWING THEM TO ACT THIS WAY... Children who act in this manner endure NO CONSEQUENCES for their actions! And it starts at a very early age. And I fault the parents who bury their head in the sand and think a few counseling sessions will work and Amanda will be fine! I read where the mom stated Amanda had left her a message on her phone that might hold the key to this tragedy.... but she couldn't bring herself to listen to it yet? WHAT!!!! She's dead and mom continues to bury her head!! This "message" should be in the hands of the law so they can determine if anyone should be prosecuted. It IS illegal to tarnish someone's name and threaten them..There are tort laws which secure our privacy etc..  (Not sure about laws in Canada..)

Has anyone ever made videos like Amanda's? An 8 minute video can take HOURS to make... How can parents allow a depressed, suicidal child ALONE LONG ENOUGH to even make the video. Nanny cams are cheap and you bet your sweet a** they'd have been all over my house! Her parents allowed her to be a victim instead of standing up for their daughter!

Well Sweet SARAH... I knew better than to watch the video.. I get a bit fired up about "children matters"...

Sorry~~

No need to aplogize, Hope.  You are on the right track.  I, at this point--having just heard now of this from this blog, am too amazed and shock to even know how to respond.  But apologies for your position I know for sure are NOT in order.

Parents here are definitely NOT without grave, grave fault indeed.
