Why is it, that you must celebrate your co-workers birthdays? After a certain amount of employees, your eating birthday cake at least twice a month.
Why do some people feel it necesary to push their bad eating habits on others, in the office, by constantly bringing in donuts, bagels, cupcakes, cookies...etc... Obesity, diabetes, heart disease are all reasons to curb your office employees need to bring in unhealthy foods. One hour lunches perpetuates bad eating habits because employees go for the quick lunch that is usually not very healthy. And who suggested employee 'bring lunch for everyone' day? I don't want to eat pasta or lasagna, or anything else derived from packaged foods loaded with corn syrup and gluten.
Salads are great if you do not smother it in croutons, fried chicken strips, heavy salad dressings...you might as well eat a burger..they have the same calorie count.
Obesity is a problem..let's not encourage it in the work place!!!

Work truly can be bad for your health. I had severe Migraine episodes about eight times a year while I was working at one company. Once I left that company, they quit. The only migraine episode I have had since was when I was put in the hospital for a week.
If you know about Migraines you understand. If you have never had one there is no explaining it.

Heck, I think work in general is bad for my health.

At the other end of the spectrum is a high-tech environment with a full-fare, made-to-order meals with everything from sushi to sandwiches, hot meals to cold salads, pastas to asian-style, chicken to buffaloo, soups and every type of beverage and dessert choice - fresh each day.
I'd opt for this type of office, if you have to be there. No one ever looks for donuts.
Makes you want to eat in. :)

MMCarlo, Jamie Oliver keeps at it. Your comment about "...what hope does that bring for these kids' future"? (Meaning: When the kids reject the fresh/not frozen food what do you do?) It takes a little while to adjust their tastebuds or let them appreciate the way they feel after eating the good stuff. When they have to choose between "healthy" or "hungry" they GET IT! Most kids do not like the change at first. Don't forget the meals they are used to eatting also have a LOT of sugar. The fresh stuff has a much different taste. Since they are (most of them) overweight already, Jamie makes some subtle suggestions to work it into their goal (for a lot of them) to lose weight. It takes a lot of education and love to show this is what is 'best' for them in the long run. Think how some parents won't reinforce the eating habits at home. This is a conflict for the children too. Quite a challenge, but Jamie seems to convince just about everyone.......eventually. His program has been successful. ~CnC

Since we can no longer respond to the bloggers post directly, I'm using CG's post to respond. If you don't want to be part of the celebration, don't be. If you don't want to eat the junk food, don't. Don't partake and leave those who want to gorge themselves on the junk alone. Each to his/her own and stop trying to be the bloody Food Police. I need no no food police to keep me away from all the cake and candy and other sugary goodies that come my way at work. I just say no thankyou. Period. End of story.

A place I worked for a long time -- 20 plus years -- always had free Dunkin Donuts lurking somewhere in the building. It was a huge outfit.
Along about 3:00 in the afternoon, I would hear a DONUT calling and I would go seeking one out.It did me no harm then.Work, exercise, worry, stress, and a beautiful wife all kept me entirely too busy to get fat.
Now, I couldn’t get away with the daily donuts at all.

Just say "nice spread but I'm not hungry" and move on. Although, I do agree that it's a wonder to me that so many people still think a good breakfast spread is a bunch of donuts and cookies, etc. I've never experienced that "one person brings lunch for everyone" event. Thank God. But, when you're up against that one, I'd refer you to my first paragraph here. LOL

You ARE correct in some stances regarding "eating habits." The CDC declares over 1/3 of Adult Americans are OBESE... (which classifies them as 30% or more above their "needed to be" weight.) And over 17% of our children. So YES... Obesity IS an issue! Obesity and poor dietary habits create many health issues and cost us BILLIONS! HOWEVER, in defense of "Poor Eating Americans" (the stats do not include "just over weight" individuals which spikes the rate up to about 67% according to CDC) .. I feel one should have good "social skills" in identifying and then addressing the problem. Instead of complaining to people about how they eat.... (esp when you are NOT FORCED to partake...). WHY NOT SHOW THEM HOW TO EAT PROPERLY instead of berating their bad habits? Make a healthy "sweet snack" the next time someone has a birthday and take it to the office. When you prove to people "eating healthy" DOES taste good, and will benefit their health, they are more likely to follow the plan. Everyone knows if a husband tells a wife she is fat, it only gets her more depressed and frustrated which makes her EAT MORE!
I help people with their "dietary plans" now as a Life Coach training in nutrition, and I choose to focus on showing them the BENEFITS of maintaining a healthy diet. I went to one clients home (diabetic/over weight) and took half his food away from him and showed him how to READ LABELS! ! Whole grain pasta is far better for everyone, but esp for a diabetic or someone just over weight. In the bleaching process of flour, it takes away many of the good nutrients and this process makes their blood "spike"... I bought him GRAIN pasta and showed him how to watch sodium content on labels, as his diabetes has given him high blood pressure.. (so SALT has become an additional risk factor for his health!) I also threw out his garlic SALT and bought POWDER and fresh garlic! He called me laughing the other day and said he looks like a maniac at the store now reading labels and is feeling better! His sugar got down to 25 when I was visiting! It came close to having to dial 911. But I don't focus on his weight. I focus on how much better he will feel not taking insulin 5 times a day!
I eat fried chicken, steak, ice cream, cakes, pasta, lasagna, etc... And I'm a proportionate size 3! I just don't eat all these things every day or several times a day!
OBESITY IS A HUGE ISSUE (no pun intended) in America. But I don't feel it beneficial to combat this by berating others habits. Just show them how to eat healthy! When they start looking better and feeling better, THEN they will thank you.

People tend to bring these types of foods into work places for a treat or celebration. My work tends to do that too. Yet its down to me what I choose to eat or not. Everything in moderation. I see these foods as treats. So choosing to eat a slice of cake needs to co-ordinated with the rest of my diet.
Obesity its a lot about lack of exercise too. Eating is half the battle. If people exercised more I don't think food would be a big issue. They'd know what foods would make their body feel better and what foods make it harder to exercise.
I was watching a programme a while ago about Jamie Oliver trying to revolutionise schools to feed children healthy food. The school was given children flavoured sugary milk because they wouldn't drink the ordinary stuff. They chose processed junk over freshly prepared food. If schools can't set the example and they are an educational establishment what hope does that bring for these kids future.
