What a great, simple, way to explain socialism.
Will America wise up before we all fail???????

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before but had once failed an entire class.

That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism. All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A. The Class agreed!

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B.

The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.

As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

The scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward and shares it with those not earning it, no one will try or want to succeed.

It just doesn't get any simpler than this.

But show me where socialism has historically benefitted any society; caused the greatest rise in the average means of its people for their efforts than capitalism. The simple fact is that there is none, and never has been.

This was passed along from my dad which I assume he received in an email. I thought it was a good lesson on how giving to those who do nothing and taking from those who do something can be a huge detriment to both parties. It seems these days there is too much "trying to even the pot" going on. For instance-"dumbing" down tests, lower educational requirements for certain jobs, the "everyone is a winner" in childrens sports etc... I even read about a school who does not mark incorrect answers in red ink because red is traditionally viewed as bad. (Huh???)

What an AWESOME POST!!

As long as you keep feeding stray cats in "the hood".. they will keep coming back for "freebies!"

The ones who suffer most?

The ones paying for their food!

EXCELLENT EXAMPLE of how handing things free to underserving people, only leaves them wanting MORE..  yet deserving less...

And the ones who are helping are sick of trying so hard... and having their hard work "given away!"

And that is why we are in this mess!

"Welfare" was meant to be a helping hand during troubling times..

Not a "troubling time" for people giving a helping hand.. (people who actually pay taxes!)

HI, LIV.  HOPE ALL IS WELL!!!

When, oh, when, will the leftists GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As has been attributed to Margaret Thatcher:  "The trouble with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people's money."

This is why I asked V about the Aliens, thinking perhaps they had figured a way to achieve or come closer to the ideal utopian societal structure.

Pat~

Can you please provide more clarity to what exactly your question is? Are you talking pure governmental socialism or socialistic programs?  What exactly do you consider as socialism? We have many, many examples of socialism in this country. As you may know, we currently have a blended economy, with socialism and capitalism working in synergy. In order to discuss this issue with any intellectual clarity, we must all have a similar understanding of a definition for socialism.

And finally, please provide what criteria we should use to judge "works".  Does that mean perfection....without any room for improvement?  Or does "works" mean, generally functioning to meet the needs for the majority of recipients/users?

Hi Di,

As I understand it-China's "success" has involved the institution of some capitalistic views.

I also was not implying that socialistic government do not work as they do-for a time anyway..)) The lecture -to me-was more to the point of taking the incentive out of those who do work, study etc... and give to those who do nothing.

Cheers

A~

I understood your point, and yes there have been some economic reforms in China recently. However, the party-state of China continues to control massive financial resources and to exercise general political direction over the economy. Through effective control of large-scale state-owned enterprises, it continues to dominate key parts of its economy.

Do you have any proof that this 'experiment' actually occurred and the class behaved in that manner.....or did someone just send this story to you in an email????

Socialism does work.

What do you think medicare is? What do you think SSC is? What do you think the United States post office is or was?

You are ignorant in the term of socialism and your class project fails to prove anything and only perpetuates the continued ignorance of Americans.

What your class professor was trying to do is confuse the class into believing communism and socialism are the same thing. Perhaps he was trying to explain Marx-Lenin economy.

There are various approaches to socialism.

Socialists generally argue that capitalism concentrates power and wealth within a small segment of society that controls the means of production and derives its wealth through a system of exploitation. This creates a stratified society based on unequal social relations that fails to provide equal opportunities for every individual to maximise their potential. Sounds alot like the very state the United Stes economy is in at the moment.

You have heard of the 1%?

If you need my history books, philosophy books, and government books. I will gladly give them to you for free to spread the wealth of knowledge I have to those who do not have it so I can help provide for my fellow citizens and make a better future for all of us.

I may have an utopian view, but so does socialism in the right context.

V~

What type of structure does Alien society have?  If you don't know....perhaps you have an educated guess?  Presuming that they are more advanced than us...perhaps there are some lessons we can learn.  That is....IF we can learn them before we destroy the planet!

(a serious question)

A~

Hmmmm…..last I heard China is a socialist country.  How many of these are produced or owned by China?

·          Your TV

·          Your computer

·          Your clothes

·          Your phone

·          Your stereo

·          Your DVD Player

·          Your Blue Ray Player

·          Our national debt

·          Virtually every product sold by Walmart

·          Your 4th of July fire crackers

Unfortunately......'simple' does not always pass the Truth Test.

Brilliant! I wish David Cameron, British Prime Minister would read this! On Friday, I read a headline story that 7 people hired by a car sales company all failed to turn up at work on their first day because the weather was not conducive - it was raining. One said he couldn't be bothered to get out of bed. The others generally said they were better off on benefit (welfare) than to take up that job! These 7 people coincidentally made their respective decisions alone - they did not collude! It just shows how unmotivatingthe socialism or the welfare state is. Get paid to lie in bed all day, whilst others go to work in the rain, snow, or blizzards! I am with this professor.
