OK, I have been in contact with a few of you personally but others have inquired as to my whereabouts and my short visits and posts, as well as no visit to the LW (even though I have)... Gosh... where to start??? First, I guess, thanks to all who have inquired... BIG HUGS, I've missed it here!!! :D Without going into a lot of background, I was laid-off twice in 2008 (totaling 4 in a dozen years). My background is as a Senior Corporate Paralegal, working in-house for large corporations. After my last layoff, decided to go back to school and change careers completely. In the meantime knowing I had to continue working, although living on some nice "packages" from the layoffs... I entered back into academia in June to begin my studies in Nursing, pursuing a Master's with an emphasis in Medical Ethics and Law. Why the drastic career move, you ask? Well, I have been a National Ski Patrol volunteer for 8 years and have my EMT Certification and Outdoor Emergency Care certification. I enjoy being a first responder and working with people, as opposed to sitting in my office only interacting with peers or clients over the phone. Many of my fellow patrollers recommended this path, and I agreed!!! As with Trish, with my career experience and education, I thought NOTHING of the difficult task of finding a new position as I was never unemployed for longer than a few days, unless by choice. Well, our "new" economy dictated differently. I have been unemployed (other than consulting "gigs") for almost 2 years, having interviewed for hundreds of positions (literally - 35 this year alone)... Very discouraging but still on the hunt and still studying away in school... Well, funny story... I get a call from the HR department of this company last Monday, she said they had already gone through the first round of interviews and, although the attorney liked the skills of the other Paralegal's, they were all a bit "stiff" and wanted somebody with personality, a bit more "bubbly"... WOW... could she have COME to a better person??? LOL... Had an interview the next morning and walked away feeling really good about it - having been there for almost 2 hours. I sent him a "thank you" that night and on Wednesday he asked me to meet for coffee on Thursday. I initially thought "HOW ODD..." but agreed. He hired me ON THE SPOT and has offered me full benefits and 10% higher salary than I have been accustomed to. So, I am now the Sr. Paralegal for the new Merchant Services division for Bank of America AND First Data!!! Now, the burning question on everyone's mind... will this change my "new" career path... NO! I will continue my studies at night and on weekends and will figure out my clinical's when I have to cross that path. Funny, this won't even interfere with my timeline for graduation. What does this mean for MM? Hopefully not much! I will be SUPER busy throughout the next couple of months but will figure it all out... if I don't burn-out first! PACE, PACE, PACE... I worked and went to school full-time when I was younger but I'm no spring chicken, so I must "get my house in order" prior to the first day on the job. The other good news that I get "giddy" over is the fact that if I can LIVE on unemployment and survive, I can't wait to save money and be able to PLAY a lot more than the past few years... I mean travel mostly, which I miss terribly! And that new Audi I've had my eye on!!!! Thanks to all for your support and friendship!!!

Excellent news CD!

Your story exemplifies the meaning of perseverance. Being laid off is never easy, but staying focused, positive energized goes a long way.

Hey, why not??? I see ads for golf/club/bar cart drivers at the golf courses all the time! And since ours "never" close, I'm not sure how it works but it wouldn't be a seasonal gig :)

Good golly AZ, I'm so sorry to hear about that. It is a real kick in the gut when it happens, I know!!!! It will pick up, the economy everywhere is limiting but something will come up. I do feel it's getting better, and I'm not just saying that because I found something. It truly is... If you're willing to relocate (even temporarily), there are tons of opportunities out there. I wasn't willing to relocate!!! Or, send your resume to George :) LOL - just kidding - well, sort of.... As for school, things are tough. I am now spending my spring break getting caught up and ahead in anticipation that working full-time AND going to school is going to SUCK for the first few months... UGH!!! But, overall, very happy with where I am right now - grade-wise!

Ah, yes, Shaz.  So many of us would do things differently.........

[Courtney, I trust you'll indulge/allow a brief blog hijacking.....making Shaz the subject for the moment....]

But.....when I give IT, all of IT, real serious thought, I realize I would have had to have been an entirely different person when I was young to have done things differently.  I would imagine the same is true for you.

No.....no schmaltzy, trite adages about "hanging in there" coming up next.  Just this:  You are clearly a unique woman [I think I've said this before.....] with a cornucopia of talents that currently you have no profitable place to employ.  So---brand new adage I'm making up as I go along....  Spin that corcucopia around like a top; re-mix those talents up and find a different way to employ them than you've employed them in the past.  You might not enjoy the work so much, but you can do it knowing it will be temporary.

Crikey....that wasn't very helpful, was it?  Sometimes I'm dumb as a post....  I just really wish I could help.  Since, clearly, I can't, please know I'm hoping and wishing and praying for things to turn around for you.  And, because I KNOW you're a woman of "guts and grit," I'm hanging on to the belief that you're going to find a way to turn those [here comes that trite crap I promised I wouldn't indulge in] lemons into lemonade!!!!!

Pat

thanks Pat,, I AM trying that very strategy right now. I have mountains of talent and very little cash...lol...all I need is ONE good contract and I am back in good form. THIS TIME I WILL save most of the profits and NOT go galivanting all over the globe.Ok thats not exactly true, because I will go traveling,,just NOT all the time ! Tink and I have an open date,,when I can finally get the H over there Your place on the river might have to be on the schedule, too.

@ Pat - you are such a wonderful, inspirational woman with the MOST kind words to all, always!!! Thank you for YOUR grit and wisdom!!! As for what I tell anyone who are plagued with jobs they despise, or are unemployed... I do a dance for them every DAY!!!! As I was told throughout my strife, if you take it negatively, it will result negatively! Ironically, last week, I felt I HAD hit rock bottom, even though I still had school to fall back upon, and I said "it takes ROCK BOTTOM for my life to turn around..." and it DID! Literally the next day! (my trainer will attest to that!!!!). Had a horrible session with her and B$%&ed the whole time)... I do feel blessed and am a FIRM believer in KARMA!!!! It may take struggles and hard times to realize it, but it DOES exist!!! Thank you for being YOU!!! As for all others... don't give up hope and stay positive! The more you suffer, the more it is revealed! I was LUCKY with this particular position, but obviously there is a reason it was given to me. There is a purpose and a reason for everything given to us in life whether it is a job, or a friend, or a relationship, or MM.... everything happens for a reason!

Congratulations, Courtney.  Your spunk and determination are an inspiration,   I hope you enjoy this new position as much as it seems those folks who've given it to you are going to enjoy you.

I suppose if we had to assign a theme song to you, it would be:  "I Did It My Way,"  with the subtitle of 'AND IT WORKED OUT FINE!!!!"

Keep us posted, Courtney, please.  I LOVE hearing good news such as you've posted here.   I will certainly be rooting for you.

Pat

Congratulations Court! It's great that you have found a way to do what you want, along with getting what you need.....That's a song isn't it....LOL!

I was laid off last week so I know the feeling somewhat, though I can't say 4 times in that length of time, it still feels crappy.  The company I was with was having financial problems so I knew it was trouble before it happened.  Being an optimist though....something will turn up....I am sure of it!
