The greatest griefs are those we cause ourselves.

Tradgedies not withstanding, I have found this to be true. How many unecessary griefs have we wittingly or¿ unwittingly¿ created?. I believe this quotation to be right on the money

I have been guilty of this many times¿ in my life. More so when i was younger Ill admit, but if im totally honest sometimes even now, much to my chagrin.

I know its difficult to admit we are not perfect but we arent and im CERTAINLY not, and I have to say that in some cases ive made myself extremely unhappy just because of the way ive handled certain situations.
¿

¿
I have had in the past quite a short fuse, which has been the cause of most of the problems,¿¿and there have been times when situations have presented themselves to me¿ ,and Ive just snapped, gone for the juggular and made a situation 10 times worse. For me it was allways a momentary thing but by the time i had finished the situation was fast deteriorating and i was left feeling wretched as I had given myself much unintentional grief, plus I had upset someone unnecessarily because i had acted on impulse

I have learned over the years to control my initial knee jerk reaction to certain situations and for sure it works. Its been a journey for sure. Sometimes you can see me in action here on the blogs when i read something and have an instant reaction, and maybe ill write something that would have been better not said. Life is a journey we all know that and when I look at it and think of this quotation I realise there has been much grief in my life which could have been avoided if I had acted in a different way. I suppose thats all about growing up isnt it? Some ,however never learn ...... do they

Do you?

Life is, indeed, a journey. Thank goodness we can learn from our mistakes.  The good news about getting older is that we have made enough mistakes to realize that we do not want to go down that path again.  We can stop ourselves before we go to far overboard into a fantasy or illusion.
As always, the choices we take, and the reactions are ours...once we become concious of what we are really doing.

People may not remember what you say or do, but they will remember how you made them feel.

Hey Darlin',

I know you're a golfer so you know that golf is a metaphor for life because, like life, most of your wounds are self inflicted.
Tough but true.

You might consider taking up Bridge.. it's a metaphor for relationships because if you don't have a good partner you better have a good hand.

Tink, by biting my tongue I mean that I will cause less grief to myself and others by not reacting too quickly to a comment, or situation. I do not mean that I will keep my mouth shut and not say what is on my mind, once I have given enough thought to it to be sure that it is something I care strongly enough to react to.
The other traits that you speak of stubborness, sloth, procrastination are characteristics of who we are.  Imagine a world where these traits and others like them that can cause grief, did not exist, and every person, thought and acted the same as the next person.  How boring would life be!
Vive le difference!

Quoting Tinkerbelle:

im thinking about more than keeping your mouth shut. Im thinking that there are many things we do that cause us grief. Stubborness is one to which I have been guilty on occasion, sloth, procrastination....how many lost opportunities have we had due to that? What about unforgiveness, one of my favourites...... I never forgave a friend for something she did and even now 20 years on it still gives me grief
Old Sophocles certainly was right

Just goes to show yah Tinky

When we harbor ill feelings....it's our own waters we contaminate. Forgiveness gives both freedom

Hey today is Monday and the P words are still here! Who would have thought....I'm glad I didn't miss anything!
I will admit to being guilty of this same thing as well, but I have been working on biting my tongue to avoid it.  In lieu of the tongue biting 101 which can hurt, I have also incorporated counting to 10. The delayed response time is the key for me.

HI Tink:

I have demonstrated similar behavior in the past, but it was not about blowing a fuse, but miswording, or should I say, using less tact. There have been times when my bluntness and total honesty spoken too quickly at the wrong time as put my foot right in my mouth.

In your defense, there are times we have a right to be angry. Try the old "count to ten" trick before responding and you might just delay the sparks. Deep breathing also works. How we react to incidents in our lives can affect our blood pressure and that is something to consider.

Good blog Tink,

Honey

Quoting bricraigpark:

Hi D,
Some great things to think about.
Believe it or not I have a few things of my own I'd like to improve on.
For example I have a stubborn streak a mile long ( maybe more).
When I am ready I will stop engaging in some self defeating behavior. But not one minute before I'm ready.
Part of what makes us interesting is our humanity. That is the good, ¿the bad, and everything in between.
I know one thing for sure I like you and most of the bloggers here.
I like you just the way you are. I think you are like a piece of art. And I try to appreciate you.
Brian¿

Well thats very nice of you to say so Brian , quite poetic even.
The stubborness thing is a difficult one to stop its allmost like a self inflicted punishment. Sometimes we know our actions and stance may be a little off centre and we really know that a different course of action may be better but we cant , for some reason bring ourselves to do that. What is it do you think that drives you to be so stubborn?

Quoting boldnsexy:

When I was younger I had a habit (and a reputation) of saying what I felt.¿ Some couldn't handle it but it was never said to be cruel, just to be honest with people.¿ Sure, it caused me all kinds of grief and I lost friends because of it.
¿
As I've matured I have put a muzzle on myself and if I'm not sure how to handle a situation I try and sleep on it and hope that a new day brings more clarity.¿ Of course somethings I still can't muzzle, when it comes down to plain frustration and catching me in the wrong moment.¿ I am after all, only human, but I am still trying to be the best person that I can be.¿

thats the point Elaine, being the best you can be, its what we should all strive for.¿ Dont you think youve given yourself unecessary grief by your actions in the past? LOL I know I have
