Over the weekend, I heard on the news that the government is contemplating banning smoking in the military, because of health issues.¿ How obsurd is this?¿ We send our young men and women, sons, daughters, wives and husbands off to war knowing that they may be killed or wounded, but for godsake don't let them smoke, because it is hazardous to their health. ¿

¿

¿

¿

You have got to be kidding me!

¿

¿

¿

I guess banning smoking in the military is one more of those very important issues that needs to be addressed.¿

Ironically, during WWII cigarettes were included in the C-rations distributed to the soldiers, as a free 'gift' from tobacco companies, which enjoyed the loyal new customers following the end of the war.

Here's some advice for the guys out there. If your girlfriend starts smoking it's probably time to use some lubricant.

I just joined. I think I should be able to enjoy a smoke if I want while I am putting my life at risk for the country. Call me selfish.

It's been reported that the health care cost of an obese person is 4 times that of a smoker. What about obese smokers... should we just kill them?

It does seem a bit hypocritical since their Commander and Chief still puffs away. Imagine nicotine stains on the ceilings of the White House....YUK

this is stupid of course. BUT everyone seems to have forgotten that when one is IN the Military, you no longer have your rights as a private citizen. The Military is its own entity and is subject to its OWN regulations and own laws and its own justice system. When you are in the Military, they OWN you body and soul. Period. smoking cuts physical stamina, it hurts breathing ( in places where personnel are not used to the climate this can be significant) it distracts those who should be alert etcetcetc. Personally, I think smoking should be banned period and all the tobacco growers put out of business. The costs to this country in health care costs and lives is staggering. It is a completley unnecessary product and does nothing but cause health problems. my own parents both smoked like smoke stacks and died hideious terrible agonizing tragic deaths because of it. I myself have asthma brought on by 18 years of second hand smoke. I HATE smoking and the stink and the filth. I cant stand to be around people who smoke, they have no idea how baddly they stink and it aggravates my breathing. I hate the butts left laying around. As I heard it,,it was ONLY an idea...and lets all remember that MOST ideas never get taken seriously. I doubt it will ever happen,. but again, I personally think smoking should be banned period. IM PISSED OFF MY TAX dollars are paying the health care costs of people who CHOOSE of their own free will to destroy their health.

Hey Shaz!

While you are at it, why not go after the obese too?????

There is a balance there.Cigarettes were always distributed to servicemen in battle to placate their nerves. What drugs are they going to administer to replace this. I read that drug companies are working on a THC pill thatrids cancer patients of nausea without the euphoric effects of the drug. The drug that replaces ciggarettes will definately line the pockets of pharmapsudical companies, and raises the question of comparative side-effects. It is ironic that the Commander In Chief smokes, yet this is being proposed. Begs the question of who is in charge there. Political correctness at it's finest moments!

Maybe they want their soldiers to be as fit as possible. Smoking will restrict their fitness level. BUT yeah of course this war is crazy. The Government is swaying away for the more important ISSUES. Afghan is like Iraq a complete waste of time. Soldiers will die and it will be a complete waste of time and lives. sarah

Smoking is definitely a difficult issue, since it is legal and a health issue. I've been surprised at times at some of the restrictions given to the military. They are defending the constitution, which is the basis for all of our laws, therefore they should be able to smoke if it is legal to smoke. The designated smoking areas I've seen these days have not affected my sense of smelling the smoke than if there were no smokers.

Too bad we can't ban stupidity, can you imagine how many politicians would be out of work serving burgers... Oh wait, never mind, I vowed in another blog to eat a burger if I wanted one. I don't want them messing up my order!

Hey Britt!

¿

Yes it's pretty ridiculous when you think about it.¿ Never mind the suicide bombers or the IED's, but good lord let's take what little pleasures you may have away anyhow.¿ Sure makes you wonder doesn't it?

What is love? Love is feeling comfortable and safe with someone but still getting weak knees when they walk into a room and smile at you. :)

For those non smokers out there, its a good thing. Your right, there are so many other reasons and ways to die. Why not make one less. Im thinking about mostly the health of the children. They have no say so if you or there parents smoke around them and give them Emphysema. Its a good thing in my opinion.

LOL! I bet they are spending 10 billion of our money to do it as well. Instead of giving them a raise, or more benefits...
