Hello, and I haven't been on here much lately, due to much going on in my life!
I'm planning a trip next week up to Long Island, New York, to see my brother who is ill with cancer.
I also want to show my son some sites as well while we are up there, as he has never been to New York. The city does terrify me, as I haven't been to the city much when I was younger.
I was telling my girlfriend that I was going up to New York, and she just couldn't believe I didn't have any plans for going into the city. Well, I might go if I had someone to go with, perhaps a family member, but if anyone had a good suggestion for me, as I'm not sure the next time I will be back up to New York again!

I live on LI and agree, hop on the LI Rail Road and see
Manhattan.
I had friends in from San Diego.
They enjoyed Central Park, Broadway Plays, shopping on 5th Ave, Bloomingdales. Other sites- the United Nations, the village, cafes on the upper eastside. Try to avoide the subways, but busses are fine and the city is fairly quiet on weekends in the summer.

I have been there a few times. It is a world in itself! I can not give you any advice as there is sooo much to do there. Hopefully you will find someone to share your adventure with.

People may not remember what you say or do, but they will remember how you made them feel.

So, no one else made any other comments? Hmmm? Perhaps you had an experience you'd rather not talk about, or maybe you just never have been to New York city and experienced all there to explore. Or maybe I'm not all alone here in this fear of the city, as last time I was there, meeting a client of ours at the time, he said to us, as we were at the Waldorf, you don't dare go into Central park at night, which was just right across the street, and it frightened me, because it actually looked spooky!
Another experience I had going into the city, was helping my girlfriend with her U.S. citizenship, so we didn't know where we were going, and how to get there, and I'm sure we had the tour of the city that day, but we must of looked like a two scared lost cats!
The other memory I have was when my Mother took my friend and I to the Empire State building when we were 10, and that was a day I sure won't ever forget!
I also remember a time around the holidays one year, my whole family went into the city, and we walked around, and looked at all the Christmas displays, and that was fun!
So this trip, I might go into the city, or I might not! But I am going up there to see my brother, and will see him for most of my time up there, but also wanted to show my son some sites as well...
Maybe I am going to the Hamptons for my pleasure, so what!

Bill, Thanks for your reply, and that does give me some ideas! I also thought of seeing a Broadway play.
What I was hoping to do, was go check out the Hamptons, take a drive along the north shore, and meet someone on the way up to New England as well as seeing family.
So, I just might find myself at the top of the Empire State building, and checking out the Museum of Natural History, to then finish the day with a stroll in Central Park...

I did something similar with the Jaimster last summer. From wherever you are on Long Island, buy a round trip ticket and take the LIRR to Penn. Station. The Empire St. Building is only a couple of blocks East of there. They will have all kinds of surface tours out in front of the ESB. Or you could walk over West to the the Hudson River at about 40th Street and take one of the Circle Line Cruise tours around Manhatten island. We went on the Beast a high speed boat that takes you out to The Statue of Liberty. If you have time; any kid would like to visit F.A.O. Schwartz. It's about 50th and 5th just up the street from NBC Studios and Rockefeller Center. Have fun.... Bring lots of money...lol.
