Of all the holidays we have throughout the year, few seem more important than Memorial Day. As I read blogs filled with drama and ridiculous gossiping, my thoughts flash to our troops. Men and women fighting a war to stabilize a country. A country where half the people are for our help, and the other half trying to kill our soldiers. I thought I'd share this with everyone: I watched the flag pass by one day. It fluttered in the breeze. A young Marine saluted it, And then he stood at ease. I looked at him in uniform So young, so tall, so proud, With hair cut square and eyes alert He'd stand out in any crowd. I thought how many men like him Had fallen through the years. How many died on foreign soil? How many mothers' tears? How many pilots' planes shot down? How many died at sea? How many foxholes were soldiers' graves? No, freedom isn't free. I heard the sound of taps one night, When everything was still I listened to the bugler play And felt a sudden chill. I wondered just how many times That taps had meant "Amen," When a flag had draped a coffin Of a brother or a friend. I thought of all the children, Of the mothers and the wives, Of fathers, sons and husbands With interrupted lives. I thought about a graveyard At the bottom of the sea Of unmarked graves in Arlington. No, freedom isn't free.

Echo..... You do not need to thank me for blogging this. Its my way of thanking you, and the thousands before you, and the thousands that will follow... for your commitment to protect our country, and this world.

thank you sizzlin for the poem...this deserves attention from all of us who live the USA and take their daily lives for granted. thanks to all who have come before me for what they have done to help other countries and for the protection they have provided. i saw the memorials to fallen soldiers many years ago in DC-the korean and vietnam monuments were so moving and personal-it took my breath away and as your poem says, freedom isn't free... Thank you Veterans and fallen soldiers for all that you have and will continue to do for our country! e

I would also like to stop in and say thanks to all of you here, and others out there, who have fought or died for freedom and our country and our way of living. Bill, thank you! You are a hero that deserves our recognition. Dog is also a veteran. Kudos to both of you.

People may not remember what you say or do, but they will remember how you made them feel.
