Earlier today I was outside a colleague's office near a school and was moved by the sound of laughing children on the playground, and within the hour was near the beach hearing the waves rolling in against the shore. In "It's a Wonderful Life" Jimmy Stewart's uncle says it's "Breakfast is Served", "Lunch is served" and "Dinner is served" while the great George Bailey says it's train whistles, anchor chains and a plane's engine. With apologies to our hearing impaired friends, I've realized the role of sound in our lives. Whether it is the Ice Cream man's chime or a particular cell phone ring, what are your favorite sounds?

the lilting call of the red tanagers as they feed off of one of the plants in my balcony planter. The coo of the mourning dove as she sits on her nest, inside my sword fern planter. This is the third sitting. My baby, when he finally says,"hello darcy" again.

What a great blog Blue. It has made me ponder the question. I'll need to think and circle back. Tonight...it was the sound of the jet engines cleared for take off heading home and the hum of the engines all the way. Next was the lovely sound of my garage door opening and just the sound of quiet with the sprinklers misting outside as I type...AHHHH home at last...

That first explosive "pssshhhhttt" of an icy cold can of coca cola then the hollow tinny sound as it is opened the rest of the way. Anticipation.

When my daughters were babies I couldn't wait to hear them talk and wondered what they would say. When they eventually learned to speak it was non stop and I loved listening to their sweet adorable little voices...especially when they would ask....."Momma....E R U??" Now, I love my dogs voice and I think with a little help and practice she would talk. HaHa! I also love listening to a pipe organ in church.

I love the sound of the south american panpipes. Amazing music. Sometimes they play in the streets of Edinburgh and Glasgow. I love to stop and listen. sarah :-)

I love the sound of the seagulls and the ocean waves at dawn. I also love the sounds of the waterfalls and rivers in the mountains.

The sounds of happy babies, children playing, natures wonderful sounds from soft breezes flittering leaves to the majestic roar of waterfalls, newborn baby animals, a sweet sigh from you signifiant other partner, a magnificant thunder and lightening show..just a few of my favorite things.

Laughter I love the sound of it. That and the opera La Boheme played really loud. It sends me.

A babbling brook. Rain pounding on the roof. Almost any sound of moving water. Sometimes dead silence can be the most pleasant sound of all.

Last night, at about 10:30, I heard something you just don't hear this time of year in New England... Thunder! With that in mind, listen closely in about two weeks. What you'll be hearing is one of my most favorite sounds of all... The sound of pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training. Cannons in the 1812 Overture also comes to mind...
