Govt urges parents to allow cervical cancer vaccinations Posted Sat Sep 29, 2007 4:29pm AEST Updated Sat Sep 29, 2007 7:02pm AEST A leading sexual health expert says up to 20 per cent of school girls are not getting vaccinated because their parents have not given them permission (file photo). (AAP) Related Story: Schoolgirls 'missing out on cancer vaccine' Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott is urging parents to vaccinate their daughters against cervical cancer. A leading sexual health expert says up to 20 per cent of school girls are not getting vaccinated because their parents have not given them permission. Doctor Edith Weisberg from the Sydney Centre for Reproductive Health Research says parents are worried that the vaccine could promote promiscuity. But Mr Abbott says it does not, and there is no reason to think that it might. "I would urge people to get their kids vaccinated," he said. "I think this is a very important public health measure. "I would hate elderly parents to one day have a child with cervical cancer and to have to think that maybe if my child had been vaccinated the result would be different."

This vaccine is controversial because its related to sexual behavior. Human Pappiloma Virus is rampant and usually does not exhibit any symptoms. Besides causing cancer, it can render women sterile, as well as whole host of other ailments. My youngest sister had recurrent HPv for close to a decade before she even found out. It can and does go back and forth between partners if they dont know they have it...even the SAME monagamous partners. She can not have children and is being monitored for "pre-cancerous cells". We are all living in limbo, wondering if she will get cervical cancer. Im not going to let fear and someones else's morality deter me from protecting my child's life. I have to go to court and petition the Judge to allow me to get her the shots,,because I am in a protracted custody battle for her custody. That will not deter me either. The best time to vaccinate is prior to age 18. Which makes the parents responsible for the decision. I think it should be mandatory. By the way..many dont know that Menigitis is a very deadly disease that haunts college students living on campus. The time between presenting symptoms and death is very short,,sometimes a matter of 24 hours.About 1/3 of all bacterial cases end in death. SHots are recommended for all students entering college. If i had known that, I wouldnt have contracted it, or spent a week in ICU, orhad a painful three month recovery. I still have migraines related to the episode, balance issues, and some loss of speech ability. I could have avoided all that with a shot.
