Hello Old Friends and Hopefully New Ones Too! I haven't been on MM in a long time and I miss everyone and especially the blogs. I moved to Galveston Island last December and have used the last few months to get acquainted with Island living and also have had a huge career change. I work for practically nothing but my job is by far the most challenging, yet rewarding one I have had to date. I run a transitional house for women that are trying to learn to live, drug and alcohol free. They are attempting to rebuild their lives in a sober environment by working and saving money to get out on their own. What I do is guide them along the way, give them moral support, teach them life skills and make sure the house runs smoothly. The girls get jobs, then pay $400 per month in rent that covers all their housing needs plus food. You can't find a deal like that anywhere. But they are required to save their money and continue to work on being clean and sober. After around 90 days, they should have enough money saved so that they can afford to get their own apartment and hopefully by this time they will have all the tools they need in order to change their life for the better and not go back to their old way of living. It can be a bit overwhelming at times, especially dealing with several women who have so many different personalities, all under one roof! Can you imagine?? Ha! The house is a wonderful, historic 2 story home. The top floor was built in 1894, then after the huge hurricane that practically wiped out all of Galveston, the bottom floor was built in the 1900's. There is a magnificent palm tree in the backyard that is huge. Then we have nectarine trees, plum trees, pear trees, orange trees....even an avocado tree. I was given the opportunity of living and working in the house when the doors opened and jumped at the chance. Honest to goodness, upon walking through the front door, I could envision the many women whose lives would be changed. They would be given another chance at becoming a better person. I could see how much good would come out of it. So many times, when people fail in life, they give up and can't see the good that is still in them. They need to feel worthy again. At that time though, the house was still in an almost abandoned state and needed thousands of dollars of repair work just to get it liveable. We don't get help from the state or from the government....everything is donated. There is a husband and wife who have dedicated their lives to this cause and have had a men's house for seven years. They saw the need for women in recovery and opened this house. We are in the process of raising money to build a kitchen because the one we have is an efficiency kitchen. The original kitchen burned down many years ago. We make do as best we can and it is a humbling experience but well worth it. So far, I have had 25 women come through the doors. Sadly, 1 out of 10 are successful in staying clean...this is a nationwide statistic, but by having a safe place to live while working towards a better future, the chances of success are greater. Being able to help another person live healthy and happy is absolutely fulfilling. Of course my heart breaks when we lose one to alcohol, drugs or living on the street. I can only help those that want to help themselves. So....this is what I have been up to in the last 6 months. Can you see why I haven't had time to get on the internet? And I have missed the friends I made while I was able to get on freely. Perusing through the blogs, I see many of the same people are here and I am glad about that. So, let's play catch up and I hope I haven't bored you too much with giving you all the rundown over the past several months. I hope to hear from you!! Love and Peace, Sheila

Hi ~Sweetshelia~ I remember you.. how have you been? I don't want to get into EVERYTHING that happened... because it was so strange. But now it looks like we have a good crew, and peace in blogland. ~Tina~
