THE NEWMAN BLOGS FROM AFGHANISTAN 624 Views 11/14/10

I received the email below from George who was a long term member here and is now seving as a civillian contractor helping our troops in Afghanistan. He gave me permission to post the paragraphs that follow. It would appear that being single here is a lot better than being single over there. I hope some of you will chime in with your support and those who have his private email addy or his PAGE may choose to contact him that way. I will make sure to copy and paste any posts that appear on this thread and send them over to George...

Subject: from Afghan

well bill i hav now been deployed for 2 weeks...what a difference in our living conditions in the states vs. here....no surprise though....well kind of

anyway all is fine, just a lot uncomfy and not very clean sleeping environment....well the entire base is a pig zone....or course it is also a war zone.....so dusty, its like working in a quarry.....

2-3 days ago on Veterans Day we were mortared a total of 6-7 times (never made the national news tmk)...talk about a rush....only one mortar hit the living/working compounds of the base...it hit one of our airstrips...about 200-300 yards from where I was at the time (Im to old for this)....the other mortar either failed to hit their target (us) or our defense systems knocked them down....the apache helicpoters where everywhere....you could here them firing on the enemy....

with me living in a tent with 120 other men it is never light there as there are 3 shifts of guys working....even in the morning it is semi dark.....the real challenge is finding your socks in the dark :) not exactly MD and i am not sure i would do it again, but this has been an expierence already....can i come home now and talk about it...lol....btw i have 3 flashlights to help me find the socks and maneuver around the compounds along with a reflector belt...ohand excuse my typing i am not correctding every error, just typing away.

the days go quickly...it is just the evening showering (another challenge if you enjoy hot water to wash the dirt and dust off of you) and jumping immediately into bed....aside from work there is nothing to do here...we finally have a good internet connection so last night (sat) was the first night we could play on the web....and you see what i am doing sunday morning at 9:15 am....with the11 1/2 hour time difference (AZ)with you all are prob still up....

one of our largest afghan vendorsis the phone and internet people....they are making a fortunre based on their rates....i pay $100 a month to have internet and we are running at a speed of less than 256k....thats just a hair above dial up....back home i pay $55 and have business high speed dsl....it is at least 10 times faster if not more....

on a bright note almost everyone here is very friendly or at least cordial....i think we all know we are in the same situration and help each other out....last night a new contractor was bunking next to me.....i came into the tent around11 pm and he had no flashlight as he tried to find his clothes...so i helped him in, gave him one of my flashlightgs to borrow until he got organized...its like you have to find ur stuff but dont want to wake anyone up in the tent too....see those flashlights are almost a commodity.....anyway thats the 5 min vs of whats going on here....oh one more thing....i am being transferred (already) from bogram to kandarhar, and ryan (my colleague) from bogram to kabul....they tell me this will happend in 4-5 days...which really means in a week or 2....assuming they dont change their minds again....lol....the only thing consistent is change and indecision....regardless i love my country!!!.....its an honor to do my very small part to support our troops....again a very small part....

so if you have time to write it always is nice to hear fromfolks from home....not much to do here but work...pls say hi to our joint friends for me...thanks....george

Re: from Afghan

hello bill....thanks for writing back....i suspect our conditions are better than yours in the late 50's early 60's. i think we as a nation are spoiled now vs. our younger years....gosh even poor people have cell phones and internet....plus you were in a combat role i am here as support staff to assist our war fighters.

sure start a blog if you would like and certainly share the info with anyone as i am honored to be of service........i miss some of the folks from mm....being here DoD severely limits what sites we can visit....it has just been recently that FB was allowed...so far dating sites or whatever you call MM is not allowable...from time to time i will try to get to a hot spot and see whats going on with mm....BTW hit my FB for some pics or my colleague Ryan Langelan has posted many more pics...i think his fb is open to the public.

on a side note i now have an international cell with sig costs to call the states ...i want to get my kids a calling card so they can call me, but they all seem to be with hidden fees, and sur charges....do you know of a good site i can buy mins for them that wont rip me off???

so nice to hear from you...thank you for your very kind words and thoughts!!

THE DREAM ACT 187 Views 12/19/10

It would have given a pathway to citizenship for young foreign born people who entered the US illegaly with their parents. Although it passed the House, it could not get by the Senate; so their status will remain the same. They are not legally in this country. Makes it hard to get a good job or higher education.

Anyone have any thoughts on the subject???

The woman says: Yes;  I SNIFF PEPPER. lolol...

THE WEDDING TEST 144 Views 11/10/10

""I was a very happy man. My wonderful girlfriend and I had been dating for over a year, and so we
decided to get married. There was only one little thing bothering me...It was her beautiful younger sister.

My prospective sister-in-law was twenty-two, wore very
tight mini skirts, and generally was bra-less. She would regularly bend down when she was near
me, and I always got more than a nice view. It had to be deliberate. Because she never did it when she was near anyone else.

One day her 'little' sister called and asked me to come over to check the wedding invitations. She was
alone when I arrived, and she whispered to me that she
had feelings and desires for me that she couldn't overcome. She told me that she wanted me just once
before I got married and committed my life to her sister.

Well, I was in total shock, and couldn't say a word.

She said, 'I'm going upstairs to my bedroom, and if you want one last wild fling, just come up and get me.'

I was stunned and frozen in shock as I watched her go up the stairs. I stood there for a moment, then turned and made a beeline straight to the front door. I opened the door, and headed straight towards my car.

Lord... And behold, my entire future family was standing outside, all clapping!

With tears in his eyes, my father-in-law hugged me and said, 'We are very happy that you have passed our
little test. We couldn't ask for a better man for our daughter. Welcome to the family.'""

And  the moral of this story is:

Always keep your condoms in your car.

GREAT SINGLES AD... 285 Views 10/30/10

THIS SUPPOSEDLY APPEARED IN "THE ATLANTA JOURNAL."

SINGLE BLACK FEMALE seeks male companionship, ethnicity unimportant. I'm a very good girl who LOVES to play. I love long walks in the woods, riding in your pickup truck, hunting, camping and fishing trips, cozy winter nights lying by the fire. Candlelight dinners will have me eating out of your hand. I'll be at the front door when you get home from work, wearing only what nature gave me... ask for Annie, I'll be waiting.....

Over 150 men found themselves talking to the Atlanta Humane Society.

THE OIL SPILL 393 Views 06/01/10

I flew over it yesterday on my way back from FL. The pilot never mentioned it but when I asked the flight attendent if we would see it she checked with the captain and I was told that if there were no clouds I could see it in about 20 minutes. She was right. From 30,000 feet it looks like a huge ugly brownish stain on an otherwise pristine blue body of water. The close-ups you see on TV don't even begin to show the magnitude. My first thought was to never buy a BP product again but that would hurt local American businessmen more than the company. I would instead suggest to any BP francise owners that they start looking for another oil company to represent. I think Obama should assemble as many welfare recipients who live in that area as possible; give them buckets and sponges and have them start cleaning up the beaches and the marshes. They might do some good. At least I would feel like my tax dollars were working...

CHINA BOUND 201 Views 07/02/10

The Jaimster and I are heading out early Sun. morning. We are flying to Beijing where we will spend a couple of days before heading to Chongqing where we board our river boat for a 6 day cruise down the Yangtze River to Wuhan. We  then head to Shanghai for a couple of days of sightseeing plus the World Expo.  My sister has a Chinese friend who lives in Xian where we will be spending one night. She promised to show us around so it should be interesting. We have all kinds of electronic gadgetry to keep us occupied on the long flights. We even purchased walkie talkies so we never lose track of each other. We will be gone for 2 weeks. It should be quite the adventure. I still can’t believe the Jaimster’s mother agreed to this trip. If I stumble upon an English speaking computer maybe I will check in. Wishing everyone a great Holiday. See you soon…

ULTIMATE TROLL STORY 232 Views 06/17/10

This is a true story. A couple that I am remotely acquainted with has a son, now in his 20's, who was born with Down Syndrome. It seems that the couple left the son at home alone while they were running some errands. Suddenly their cell phone rang and a very excited son told his parents that he had captured a troll and locked it in his bedroom. After a very short time because they could not make any sense out of what the kid was saying they decided they better go home and see what was going on. Upon their arrival they found that his bedroom door was tied shut from the outside and the son had piled furniture in front of his door effectively barricading it. They removed the furniture and opened the door. They found a very shaken and rattled dwarf standing in the room. He quickly produced identification and explained that it was his first day on the job as a census worker. You can't make this stuff up...

LA. BOYCOTTS AZ. 113 Views 06/02/10

over our tough new immigration law. I have to laugh. L.A. has nothing better to do. The city council of a sanctuary city in a bankrupt state where polls show that a majority of CA. residents favor AZ.'s new law decides to come up with some political BS. It's the beginning of the summer. Nobody from CA. comes to AZ. in the summer. We go there; but a lot of us might not now. L.A. also gets about 30% of their electricity and a lot of their water from AZ. Maybe AZ. will just pull the plug and close the valves and let the people of L.A. sit around thirsty in the dark sweating without A/C and pondering why nobody from AZ. is visiting their city and beaches this summer...

THE KENTUCKY DERBY/PREAKNESS 229 Views 04/28/10

Lookin At Lucky has become the favorite after an injury caused to be scratched. A guy I know co-owns him. He hangs out in the same place I do. He is a really nice guy. He actually bought the Jaimster and I dinner a couple of weeks ago. Of course he can afford to. Bob Baffert the trainer and Garrett Gomez the jockey are also from Tucson. It's a pretty big deal around here. If Lookin At Luckey wins; drinks will be on the house for quite while...

GREAT ILLUSION 140 Views 04/25/10
Someone emailed this to me. It's pretty cool.

View from 5 meters distance

For those of you in the 21st century (e.g. blackberry
owners), you'll need to look at this on a pc. You also
have to get out of your seat and walk away from
your computer.

Don't forget to blow up the photo by clicking on it and then maximizing the page.

When you look at this picture in a
closer look you see its
Albert Einstein.

But if you stand 15 feet away,
It will become
Marilyn Monroe.

WINKS, NODS, AND EMAILS FROM GOLD MEMBERS 472 Views 04/11/10

I almost never respond to a wink from a GOLD MEMBER. If part of their membershiup entiles them to send an email, why would they take the easy way and just wink when they can be so much more personal, original and interesting with an email??? They don't have to write volumes. A short clever note will do the trick. Maybe we need to implement the NOD. Something between the wink and the email. A compromise. A canned sentence with a fill in the blanks feature. LOL...

A DATING SERVICE TAX??? 295 Views 04/08/10

FNC just did a segment on new taxes being considered to increase revenues now that gov't. spending is out of control. One of the ideas they talked about was taxing dating services. They did not mention MM by name but did mention a well known competitor. It is important that we all write our Congressional representatives ASAP and tell them that just being here on MM is taxing enough. lol...

EMPTY NESTERS 199 Views 04/05/10

Well I guess I fit that designation. The Jaimster returned home after spending his 2 week Spring break with me. It's amazing how busy he keeps me and how much I enjoy having him here. If we aren't working on his math, we are going to guitar lessons, taking scuba lessons or stopping by the Airsoft store. It's kind of lonely here today without him. Well I will be heading to SD  next week to look after him for the weekend as his Mom has an out of town wedding. Too bad it isn't hers. LOL. Then it's only a short time until he arrives for his Summer vacation which is 3 months and allows plenty of time to do a ton of things. Something to look forward to...

BAD BLOG VS. GOOD BLOGS 317 Views 03/30/10

I read somewhere on here that a poster accused MM of taking down the good blogs while leaving the bad blogs up to keep the people busy. It got me thinking what is a bad blog and what is a good blog. I assume that anyone posting here finds some merit in what they are blogging about or they wouldn't bother. I don't consider the people who read the blogs as illiterate so I assume any blog that attracts and entertains a bunch of readers must be a pretty good blog; even if I am not interested in it. Seems to me that blogs like beauty are in the eye of the beholder. Anyone who judges the merit and importance of a blog based soley upon their opinion or if they  authored the blog might best be described as a pompous A**...

2010 CENSUS 100 Views 04/02/10

It's now due. Did everyone fill one out??? Did anyone fill one out??? You really should, you know. For most of us it should be easy. Just write in the number 1 and mail it back. When they start physically canvassing your neighborhood is the time to be concerned. It will be a scammers HEY DAY. Don't let it become their pay day. The legitimate people should all have badges with photos. Don't let anyone in your home and don't answer any questions other than how many people reside in your home. If you recognize anyone from Britt's Rougues Gallery, immediately Lock your door and call the police. Please; don't end up with a blog on here explaining how you were scammed by a census worker...
