Hey DI~~

That's precisely my point.....

LET'S GET US OUT!

The only way to get us out is to find where the "messes" lie..

ONE mess I know exist.. is FRAUD... Easy enough to catch .. right?

NO.. I am afraid when ppl purchase WATER BOTTLES .. and the government even calls it "water dumping".. It must be  pretty big issue..

My point.. ??

If ppl get stamps and purchase water .. only to DUMP.. and collect..

HOUSTON,, WE HAVE A PROBLEM..

Let's DRUG TEST the recipients.. (surely water dumpers who go and collect $$ for plastic MUST be on drugs??)

And place ones who CAN work in environments they are comfortabe in and can LEARN... (and MOST CAN work) Matter of finding proper employment..

and let's move forward!

And if you can't establish a proper ID card.. and pay taxes..

GET THE HELL OUT OF OUR COUNTRY! :)

Hope~
I think it is important to remember how we got here, and not to go back.  We know that didn't work.  We see the evidence in the ongoing struggle to clean up the mess!!

Hey Lady DI... Good to see you again...

~~ALL~~

I don't care about fautling one President over another yada, yada.. I think little of our issues regarding WELFARE PLACEMENT has to do with whatever President is in office... FOOD STAMPS, HOUSING, DISABILITY, ETC.. HAS ALL BEEN ABUSED MUCH LONGER THAN 4 YEARS!!

WELFARE started as a "Lending Hand"... and sadly, it has become like every other program run by the government... MISUSED AND ABUSED... If we had compensation for every dollar misplaced, we could assist the ones not receviing help that truly warrant it. People make fun of ones like the naked man who broke into Salvation Army shop and cameras caught him getting clothes and putting on a dress and hat. They showed this on the TODAY show... a week or 2 ago... Well, guess what? I would bet my bottom dollar he has some severe mental issues and is not receiving assistance because he doesn't know how to get it! (and quite possibly even a VET)

In my old neighborhood in central Florida, there was a mentally ill woman who would stand in the road.. She was not declared mentally incompetent but yet it was OBVIOUS she was ill. A car hit her before.. She was not hurt severely... BUT NO ONE STEPPED IN...

I say place all taxes on everything we buy.... PERIOD!! same percentage for everyone.. The more you buy, the more you give in obviously... And put all the IRS workers in the CHILDREN AND FAMILIES SOCIAL SERVICES OFFICE... and BTW.. Make the old IRS workers receive same pay as the social service workers... Because I've no doubt if one works for the IRS.. (for the government..)...  they make a heck of a lot more than people in social services who work for "WE THE PEOPLE!"

Instead of trying to "GRAB MORE DOUGH".. why doesn't the government utilize the dough they already receive in a more responsible manner.. Starting with DRUG TESTING ones who receive assistance and the ones eligible to work... Give them a job doing "something" they are capable of doing.. I don't care of it's making copies at the court house!! WORKING makes most people feel "better" about themselves. This will build SELF ESTEEM AND SELF WORTH" in the individual and motivate them work hard at building a better life for themselves! :)

Ok….so can we now quit with the ‘those other people need to work’?  Can we quit with the stereotypes?  The welfare law is clear.

Of course there are more people on food stamps under President Obama. He inherited a depression! This country was shedding 700,000 jobs per month the day he walked into office---The banks were insolvent, housing was collapsing and the auto industry was bankrupt......AND the GOP has done nothing to try to help since then. Their only objectives have been to make Obama a one term president and pass regulations on a woman’s body.

The GOP had ten years of tax cuts to make things better. Where ARE all those jobs that tax cuts produce?? It was like an outrageous party where all the big shots got drunk on greed and excess.....and then ended up puking all over everything! Does NO ONE remember what was happening in this country when President Obama took over?

Ok, call me a bleeding heart…..but I have witnessed soul crushing poverty. When I worked for Parkland Hospital (Dallas)….these folks were some of my patients. They weren’t low-lifes, drug lords….or whatever. They were desperate, sad women….old people that were skinny and truly hungry….and many mentally impaired......sick and beaten down. Of course there are 'some' that game the system….but that can and should be fixed.  But to lose sight of the bigger picture is like throwing the baby out with the bath water.  There is profound suffering and need in this country.

I thought “We the People”…. means ALL of us…not just those with money and good fortune. I thought we were in this together!! I thought this was supposed to be a Christian nation??? Those people on the margins are the ones Christianity supposedly cares the most about. Would you give Christ a cracker if he walked today? What is this loathing all about? Ok…maybe loathing is too strong of a word…..let me say “indifference”.

It just seems to me that this call to selfishness is antithetical…. to the Gospel values of compassion and love.  It seems that self interest is taking the place of a higher power.

If the TOP 5% of American incomes are paying 58% of income taxes collected..

LOOPHOLES OR NOT..

THE WEALTHY DO THEIR SHARE!

I am so sick of people begrudging others who have (or possibly have not) worked hard for their wealth!

The "wealthy"

EMPLOY PEOPLE..

CREATE BUSINESSES..

GENERATE REVENUE..

PAY TAXES..

EMPLOY PEOPLE WHO PAY TAXES..

SPEND MONEY ON FURTHER $$$$ STUFF BECAUSE THEY CAN AND THEY WANT IT and guess what? ARE TAXED ON THEIR LUXERIES!

IE: A WEALTHY person went out and bought a 1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe    for $8,700,000 in 1987.. Guess what? The TAXES he/she paid on THAT CAR ALONE.. add up to more taxes than most of us will pay our entire life!

TAXES ARE TAXES.. and they should make it simplistic and tax whatever we get and forget "income" because many people don't work because when the government sets out a food bowl.... the leeches come in droves!

When the "WEALTHY" make  "PURCHASES" at places as an auto store: This SECURES businesses stay open and people remain employed. A LITTLE COMMON SENSE IS ALL IT TAKES TO FIGURE THIS OUT! It amazes me when people who work at such places "complain" about wealthy individuals when if it were't for the wealthy "spoiling" themselves.. they might not have a job!

The "wealthy" are NOT the issue here... The issue with taxes is.. HALF THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES DON'T PAY THEM AT ALL!! (I WONDER HOW MANY ARE EVEN LEGAL!!) And when you couple this with the fact the majority of those individuals in a  sense "double dip" our system leaching on society getting free food, shelter, checks... (I won't even go into disability that many receive that DON'T WARRANT IT.. BUT THEY HAVE FOUND THEIR OWN LOOP HOLES!!)

Everyone needs to STOP picking on the wealthy.. And wake up! The 5% is what is holding our head up out of the water.. But now their arms grow tired! And they are becoming angry..

AND I DON'T BLAME THEM! Worry about the blood sucking leeches destroying our nation due to their free ride!

Guess what people.. If your "mama" took it away when you got in trouble as a child... IT'S A LUXURY.. not a necessity! If I have to pay for my own phone ... SO SHOULD OTHERS.. Esp when they come in the welfare office with their gold teeth and spinning rims! And that isn't being predudice.. IT'S DECLARING A FACT! And if you don't believe me... GO SIT AT ONE FOR A FEW DAYS AND WITNESS THE "RECIPIENTS" CLIMBING OUT OF THEIR ESCALADES AND SUBURBANS!

I can't imagine how much it much chaps arses of the wealthy.. cuz it sure as heck makes my blood boil.... and I don't even have enough of a back to carry a leech!
IF YOU ARE UNDER THE "DELUSION" EVERYONE WHO RECEIVES "BENEFITS" DESERVES, WARRANTS OR IS TRULY IN NEED OF THEM.... I feel sorry for you and the plastic bubble you live in!

You are not discussing taxes...your complaining about welfare.

Take a look at what your taxes pay for....policemen, firemen, schools, roads, etc....

If you want to talk about taxes then do so..If you want to gripe about welfare, illegal immigration, than do so...
but don't hide it under the guise of unfair taxation!

The rich have a way of avoiding taxes using loopholes and off-shore accounts...so give me a break on who does not pay taxes.

Illegals buy groceries just like you and I and so they pay sales tax, the rent they pay to apartments goes to property taxes.

They also pick the fruit and vegetables you eat for less than $20 a day of hard labor.

A child with a trust fund can apply for welfare because, if done right, his trust find is not considered income...

Di,

I agree with your thoughts that a person who pays tax on income of (say) $60,000 should not pay a higher income tax percentage as a person making (say) $1,000,000. Saying that, however, I do think this disparity stems from our present tax code because of its complicated form. If we simplified the tax code, and yes a flat tax could provide this option, then we would basically eliminate a large portion of tax avoidance measures that only the wealthy are able to use. It is the tax avoidance measures that have a wealthy tax payer paying less than the average income taxpayer. Raising the percentage for wealthy earners will only led to less tax because they will find new loop holes or move their money to a more tax friendly country.

How do you know the flat tax will not work? I believe that it can work. I lived in a country that functioned without an income tax quite successfully. The consumption tax seems to be very equitable. Not all goods had the same amount of “consumption” (Duty) tax added. For instance basic food had little tax added but junk food had more. Boats had a huge tax as well as new cars. This seemed to be a fair method because the more you earned the more you consumed thus the higher your taxes paid.

Taken from the federal website:  So this is how the federal government handles Welfare.

US Welfare System - Help for US Citizens

Federally funded and governed US welfare began in the 1930's during the Great Depression. The US government responded to the overwhelming number of families and individuals in need of aid by creating a welfare program that would give assistance to those who had little or no income.

The US welfare system stayed in the hands of the federal government for the next sixty-one years. Many Americans were unhappy with the welfare system, claiming that individuals were abusing the welfare program by not applying for jobs, having more children just to get more aid, and staying unmarried so as to qualify for greater benefits. Welfare system reform became a hot topic in the1990's. Bill Clinton was elected as President with the intention of reforming the federally run US Welfare program. In 1996 the Republican Congress passed a reform law signed by President Clinton that gave the control of the welfare system back to the states.

Eligibility Requirements for State Welfare Program

Eligibility for a Welfare program depends on numerous factors. Eligibility is determined using gross and net income, size of the family, and any crisis situation such as medical emergencies, pregnancy, homelessness or unemployment. A case worker is assigned to those applying for aid. They will gather all the necessary information to determine the amount and type of benefits that an individual is eligible for.

The Federal government provides assistance through TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). TANF is a grant given to each state to run their own welfare program. To help overcome the former problem of unemployment due to reliance on the welfare system, the TANF grant requires that all recipients of welfare aid must find work within two years of receiving aid, including single parents who are required to work at least 30 hours per week opposed to 35 or 55 required by two parent families. Failure to comply with work requirements could result in loss of benefits.

V~  Taken from South Brooklyn Legal Services website.  (This is New York State’s requirements re: Welfare)

Welfare recipients are required to do “work activities” for a certain number of hours per week to receive benefits.

What Are Work Activities and How Many Hours Must I Work?

Most people will be required to work 35 hours a week. However, no one can be assigned more than 40 hours a week.

Single parents must work at least 30 hours per week, with the first 20 hours from any of the following activities:

  • Employment
  • Work experience program (WEP)
  • Job placement by the Human Resources Administration (HRA)
  • On-the-job training
  • Job search (for up to 6 weeks)
  • Community service
  • Vocational educational training (for up to 12 months)
  • Providing child care to someone doing community service.

·         Additional hours of work can be other assigned activities.

For 2-parent families, one or both parents must do at least 35 hours per week of work activities. If the family receives child care benefits, the family must do at least 55 hours of work activities. Parents may divide these hours as they wish.

Adults in families with no dependent children must work 35 hours per week, with the first 30 hours from the following activities:

  • Employment
  • Work experience program (WEP)
  • On-the-job training

Do I Get To Choose the Kind of Work I Am Assigned to Do?

If you have dependent children, HRA is required to assess your education, skills, work experience, training and vocational interests. HRA is required to write up an “employability plan” indicating your assigned work activities and an employment goal that reflects your preferences if possible. If your preferences cannot be met, the plan should say why. The work you are assigned to should be consistent with your employment goal and preferences, if such work is available.

HRA may assign you to work activities even before it completes the assessment. The assessment must be completed within 90 days of the date you were found eligible for welfare.

~~V~~ I could not agree with the following letter more!!!
NOTE: I did NOT write this, nor do I know the author... Passed on via email...

BUT THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I FEEL....
(The intro below is by someone I also do not know...)

********

"The problems we face today are there because the people who work for a living are outnumbered by those who vote for a living"

This was written by a 21 yr old female who gets it. It's her future she’s worried about and this is how she feels about the social welfare that she’s being forced to live in! These solutions are just common sense in her opinion.

Nov 18, 2011

Put me in charge . . .

Put me in charge of food stamps. I'd get rid of cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho's, just money for 50kg bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.

Put me in charge of Medicare. The first thing I'd do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we'll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke or get tats and piercings, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks?

You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your "home" will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.

In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a "government" job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good..”

Before you write that I've violated someone's rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules.. Before you say that this would be "demeaning" and ruin their "self esteem," consider that it wasn't that long ago that taking someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.

If we are expected to pay for other people's mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

AND while you are on Government subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Government welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job.
Now, if you have the guts - PASS IT ON...

I agree that the goevernment will not change the tax system because they do not want to lose control nor do they want their friends and family out of jobs. What they do not understand that putting more money into buisness and the people will cause more jobs to be available which could take in those out of work from the government layoffs.
As far as welfare goes this system will never be changed because the government assures itself of their votes. During this current presidency the amount of people on food stamps has increased by vast percentages.

Quoting Voyager54:

~Di~...I will guess, and it's a really good guess, that the primary reason that nobody ,(in government), wants to even think of a Flat Tax is because it will almost immediately dissolve the IRS as we know it. Thousands of tax people would be out of a job. H&R Block, tax lawyers and all down the line...people fear change...but the Flat Tax IS a great idea. Besides, how would we ever know if we don't take that horse for a ride...

V~
One should always get to know a horse, before you just swing up and ride! If not.....it's a really good way to get bucked off and hurt. *wink* This is something I DO know a lot about.....lololol.

A flat tax would further shift the tax burden to the poor and middle class, providing yet another tax reduction for the wealthy. Under a flat tax, my taxes would go up by approximately $3000/year, while your's would go down.

Well V..I finally made it over here and also read your other "TAX IDEAS" and I sit on the bank (haha) with you regarding this matter..

I too, feel penalizing the wealthy in a higher tax bracket is a crock! The issues with our taxes does not derive from anyone who actually pays them.. The issues lie with the people who DO NOT, never have.. and never will!

Take all the people who never pay taxes, (or for their own food and housing for that matter) ad that with the people in our government earning far too much for doing NOTHING.. and BTW.. then we continue to pay them after retirement after they've made a lifetime sitting up in Congress twiddling their thumbs ..consistently blaming every President (Demo or Rep) there ever was when THEY have been up there for 20+ years ... Ad those things together and all the "illegals" floating into our boiling pot.. and THAT'S where the $$$$ goes!!

SAY NO TO ILLEGALS
SAY NO TO THEIR CHILDREN ILLEGALLY BORN HERE (Did everybody know if an illegal has a baby in the states... the child becomes an automatic U.S. citizen, therefore they fall under all the welfare programs?)
SAY NO TO BIGGER GOVERNMENT
SAY NO TO LIFETIME CONGRESSIONALS ... PERIOD! THE PRESIDENT HAS A LIMIT FOR OFFICE.. AS SHOULD THEY!
SAY NO TO FREE HAND OUTS!! TO BANKS AND CITIZENS!!

According to The Tax Foundation:
The top-earning 5 percent of taxpayers (AGI equal to or greater than $154,643), however, still paid far more than the bottom 95 percent. The top 5 percent earned 31.7 percent of the nation's adjusted gross income, but paid approximately 58.7 percent of federal individual income taxes.

WHY IS IT THE ONES EARNING ABOVE $150K .. only 5%... pay MORE than HALF our collected taxes? FLAT TAX MUST BE IMPOSED AND DO AWAY WITH IRS!
Tax our goods, etc EQUALLY... and if it is placed on goods, etc.. This ENSURES EVERYONE IS PAYING THEIR SHARE!! THE IRS IS OBSOLETE!

AND.. WELFARE WAS INDUCED DUE TO THE DEPRESSION AND MEANT TO LEND A HELPING HAND.. NOT BE A WAY OF LIFE FOR MANY AND THEIR BABIES AND THEIR BABIES BABIES!

If I can head 120 miles offshore w/ a bunch of men and throw 3 inch stern lines in 8' seas and be treated .. well.. let's just say it wasn't a great life out there... But I did what I had to do to survive..
WHY CAN'T People collecting welfare checks be drug tested and monitored.. If someone wants the government to pay....THEY SHOULD GO WORK FOR THE GOVERNMENT / STATE PICKING UP TRASH AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD!!

And I may be no math scholar.. but isn't 10% of $1 Million still 10 times more than 10% of $100,000..

NO MORE FREE RIDES!!! I say put the "Welfare Recipients" to work on maintaining our roadways, building houses for Habitat, etc... As long as you put food out for stray cats.. they will continue to eat!

~Di~..I'm no tax expert. I have to trust my CPA to handle these matters for me. The paper work alone is ridiculous. All I do is sign. The sheer mathematics is stupid.
FLAT TAX...simplifying the tax code would go a long way to saving everybody money. The government has never had a problem of over engineering anything including our lives. And that includes stupid tax codes.

Ok V....I'm going to make an analogy that will hopefully make sense. :)))

To someone that doesn't know anything about golf....it seems like it would be such a "simple" game. Just hit the ball and make it go into the little hole. But to someone that really understands it, there are many other factors involved in order to play a good game.

Just because the flat tax may seem simple...it is not...nor is it good for the country.

Quoting V: "No way I will pay 38.9% or however the number works out. Ridiculous!"

V~ Presumably that is the rate you were paying in the 90s when Clinton was president. The highest tax bracket currently is approx 35%....except for the Wallstreet billionaires. Because the Bush tax cuts were not paid for, they were passed through a process called Reconciliation by the Republican congress, which meant that they could not be made permanent. The Bush tax cuts are set to expire in December 2012, when the top tax bracket will go back up by 4%.....to your 39%. This is a whole separate thing from the Buffett Rule.

As I recall, our country [including the wealthy] was doing pretty well economically in the 90s.

V~
The Buffett Rule has nothing to do with penalizing “work”. The Buffett rule stems from the gross tax inequity that exists between people that actually work and produce a product….verses people like Warren Buffett that make gobs of money off of money!! Our current tax system values wealth more than it values work. People that make money off of derivatives [the stock market] pay approximately 15% on that money, while people that make a pay check pay much more…25-35%. Example: Mitt Romney made 20 million dollars of income last year off of his stock investments and only paid 14% tax according to his 2010 tax return.

According to a White House statement released in January 2012, the rule is part of "measures to ensure everyone making over a million dollars a year pays a minimum effective tax rate of at least 30 percent ... implemented in a way that is equitable, including not disadvantaging individuals who make large charitable contributions." The White House also stated that "no household making more than $1 million each year should pay a smaller share of their income in taxes than a middle class family pays."

The bill received a 51-45 majority of senate votes on 04/16/2012 in the Senate, but failed to earn the 60 necessary to overcome the Republican filibuster, despite 72% of the public being in favor of the rule according to the most recent CNN poll. Gallup Poll refects similar numbers.

My question is, why are some of our elected representatives NOT voting in accordance to what their constituents want...and only vote like their wealthy donors want? Does our government only favor the ultra wealthy 1%? Where's the fairness in that? How fair is it that a Hedge Fund manager who makes a quarter billion dollars a year, pays a lower tax rate than a person who makes 50 thousand dollars a year? Republican senators think that's ok.

Note: Just so no one thinks I am exaggerating the staggering amounts of money hedge fund managers make, in 2010 John Paulson led the list with a record $4.9 billion in personal earnings. That’s a whopping $2.4 million an HOUR. Now that might be ok if he was the CEO of Apple or something….but he’s not! He produces actually nothing for this country and the system is rigged in his favor.
