Voyager, I saw your update. Savage misses you too. Believe me. Try this.....go to Google and enter "Mishka wants potatoes" then click on the link for the Husky Dog and play the video. It always makes me laugh. Hope it helps cheer you and gets you to remember the best of times with Savage after all you have been through. Oh, I never knew anyone or anything could upstage a child. The husky in the video does. Remarkable. No wonder she got a contract with Disney! ~CnC

I'm so sorry V. I feel your pain more than you can possibly know. I'm going though the same thing with my Mollie. She saw me through some of the most difficult times of my life. No matter how many years they share our lives, it's never long enough. They give us so much, and ask so little in return...just to be loved and share our lives.
The connection some of us have with our animals is, at times, closer than those we have with most humans. There's a bond...a communication we share that goes beyond just sharing a space. They speak to our heart and touch our soul in a way no human can...and we understand completely what they're trying to tell us. People who have never had this connection with an animal scoff, but we know...we know....
58+ is still young, no matter how old you feel right now. There are no words I can offer you that will make saying goodbye easier. The pain will ease with time, and be replaced with bitter-sweet memories...but for now...wrap that pain around your heart and allow yourself to grieve, and know your pain is shared.

A quick Google search for "Royal Savage" yields nothing but sites about boats. Sorry. A further search for "Royal Savage Dog" or "Royal Savage the Dog", or "Chesapeake Bay Retriever Royal Savage" yields nothing relevant to your beloved pup. So sorry. Wish I could find it. I'd love to see it.

~ Thank you, all of you, for the kind wishes. This dog has SO much heart. There have been at least a dozen times in the past couple of months where I feared I'd wake up to a dead dog...and yet today...amazing. Amazing tenacity. He is sitting up, drinking lots of water, eating, looking around. It's like that movie, Awakenings!
Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, unlike other 'sporting dog breeds', have so much heart. They truly have human tendencies. They are only one of maybe 5 truly American breed of dogs. They are also the largest of the five different retriever breeds. Tough, loyal and endless swimmers. I think their time swimming in the Gulf of Mexico for the past 7 years has extended their lives. Although they are bred to handle ICE water, I don't think it's ultimately to healthy to allow the dog to do that too often. They still come out cold and shaking. Whereas in the Gulf, the water is well over 85*, and they will swim until the end of time. I have owned this dog's mother, his grandmother, his father, his grandfather and his great grandfather...a long history...a long list of memories. The loss of my father recently, and the untimely death of my mother 6 years ago and my wife 17 years ago...all of it is wrapped up in this one dog. It's weird. But I still have a lot of cats, although they are now in their teens. I've cut down the number of horses I used to have, (24), lol...I know, a lot. And anywhere from 7 -12 dogs.
I keep telling evverybody that after my wife died and I started dating years ago, the more women I dated, the more animals I would collect because animals were easier...even if it meant A LOT of animals! lol. Women would chew me up and toss me aside like a Christmas wrapping...yes, I am like Christmas wrapping. Mysterious and beautiful and heavy. Oh well, all these cats and dogs and horses...if a woman is a spinster if she lives with 4 or more cats..., then I must be a curmudgeon. The ultimate hermit.
Anyway, you folks are very kind and I thank you again for your kind wishes for Royal Savage.
PS:...ok, how can I leave you with a trivia test... The name ,Royal Savage...where does it come from and how did it come to be?...Gotta be a history buff to know it, but it was an important part of American History. Especially in this area where I live.
I'm surprised he won't live to be 20...but as of today, who knows...it's like the Energizer bunny.

~ WindRider~...You win the prize for answering the trivia correctly. I thought I'd ask it because this entire week has been dedicated to celebrating the War of 1812 which was primarily conducted up here. This town was a British encampment throughout the mid 1700's and on through 1814. My dog, one of my boats, one of my horses and my farm are of the same name. And is coined perfectly regarding who I am. A redneck royal...born of european nobility but raised in the remote mountains of America...lol...wait until I get my Tipi! Unfortunately, after years of trying since my wife died, other women in my life don't have the same clout with me as do all of my animals.
V...
I just happen to be a lover of old ship wrecks more than a history buff, although I do enjoy that, too. Soooo...what's my prize? Perhaps a picture of some of your horses?
I've heard about the celebrations and reenactments up your way, but have never had the opportunity to witness them.
A Tipi, huh? Going to erect it in your yard or in the woods? Sweat lodge for enlightment?
I've never traced my lineage, but I have a feeling it was filled with scallywags and renegades. Hope so, anyway. It would explain a lot of things.
I understand completely about the animals. It's the same here. I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't surrounded with them. Now it's a 'love me-love my animals' thing.

Oh, Voyager, I just saw this. I am so sorry. I've put quite a few best friends down because the suffering they would have to go through to reach the final moment would have involved too much pain to ask them to go through. But I've also let at least one dog die naturally, a dog that wasn't suffering at all as it approached it's final hour. Except for the "doggie dementia."
I am so, so sorry for what you and Savage are going through. So, so sorry indeed. Our canine friends are so often more dear to us, more precious, than many of our human friends are.
God bless you and bring you peace during this trying time, and may He grant you and Savage the blessing of being near each other when the final moment comes.
Pat

...Savage is nearing death. He is almost 17. His birthday is September 21. He was born four months after my wife died. His mother was my late wiife's dag. That dog , Rosella, died last November, three months shy of her 19th birthday. for a Chesapeake bay retriever, my dogs live long lives. Still, you begin to ponder all the memories that have accumulated while having any pet. And in Savage's case, I have had his father, his grandfather and his gret grandfather and his mother and his grandmother. Lots and lots of memories. I'm giving him comfort care. No reason to traumatize him by taking to a vet office to put him down only to make me feel better. Putting animals down is a human response. I'm a cradle to the grave owner. I pledged a life long commitment. A life long responsibility. I am not about to cut things short, even if it's by days, just to accomodate me or anybody else. In the photos on my profile, these pics were all taken in the past year and a half to two years. The progression when they get to a certain age speeds along exponentially. They have been my loyal companions on so many adventures. Our solo trips far out into the gulf of Mexico on the boat for two or three nights...not easy to do completely alone, but with Savage and Rosella, they made it easy. And now with Rogue...I'm going to be needing a couple of buddies for him. Unfortunately, Savage was the first Chessie I never bred and now I am lamenting that dumb choice. So...it's the end of line for THAT particular line.
He has days left if that. Little water taken yesterday, no food. And no water today. The hallucinations haven't commenced yet, but they soon will. Just like with elderly people, those last hours of life has them staring that 1000 yard or thousand light year stare...and then, with a slight heave and last breath, they are gone. A moving experience whether it's human or loyal pet.

I'm so happy that Savage has started improving. It's a great feeling when that occurs. My prayers have been with you both.
Retrievers are all magnificent dogs, but it's been said the Chessies are the best 'all round' of the lot...they can do anything. Seems each of us has one breed that touches our hearts a little more than the others even though we love them all...and I'm pretty sure you 'love 'em all' because I really doubt that hairball in your picture is a Chessie pup. ;-)
Can you actually have too many horses as long as they're loved and taken care of? Since I could fit three of mine into one of yours...does that mean I only have nine? As for the cats...a home isn't a home without a cat or two draped on the furniture and running the show.
Wasn't Royal Savage the schooner commanded by Gen. Benedict Arnold?
