I love college football season!! I'm a HUGE fan of the Oklahoma University Sooners. Yes, there is another Oklahoma university football team/school...but, I don't give them much thought.
There are several games happening today...Oklahoma State University plays at 2:30 p.m. and Oklahoma University plays at 6:00 p.m. A fun-filled Saturday!!!
How about you? Do you enjoy football season? Do you prefer enjoy college football, professional football or both?
I got a kick out of the gal I sit next to at the office. She's got a son that is turning 14-years-old this next week and a daughter that's 11-years-old. I asked her if their schools were going to let the students watch the President's address to the school kids this next Tuesday.
She didn't know much about the whole subject, so I knew she would Google it and check it all out. I told her to be sure and watch the PSA (public service announcement) video on U-Tube and tell me what she thought.
Later in the day, she asked me why I didn't "approve" of the President giving a "pep talk" to the school kids next week...and then she wanted to know why I didn't like or approve of the PSA video.
I pointed out to her that I didn't say I didn't "approve" of the President giving the school kids of America a "pep talk." Presidents have been addressing school kids of America since way back when the film media was available to provide this means of communication. I told her that I didn't necessarily disapprove of the PSA video if they would edit out the goof-ball, tatted-up guy declaring his allegiance to "HIS" president, Barak (kiss the one bicep) O'Bama (kiss the other bicep). I don't feel it is appropriate for elementary age school kids to see such a ridiculous display. While that guy may truly mean he's dedicated to "his" president, it doesn't mean that I'm going to declare my allegiance to that man!
She took off on a tangent about how I approve news clips of war and violence and such, which I told her no, I do not approve of the media coverage of the various wars the United States is entangled...then I pointed out that she was veering off of the subject...the issue before us, is the issue of the President using the various media techniques to steer people to pledge themselves to follow him, not the country, and to do it without any qualms or rather just follow unconditionally and basically, blind. While I appreciate that every president has used the media to facilitate whatever message or cause they were trying to get across, sway voters/taxpayers in this direction or that direction...I told her that O'Bama's media people were doing the man a terrible disservice. Instead of presenting in a subtle, subliminal way, O'Bama's media people are wide-open, blatant about what should be happening and what people should be thinking, as well as doing. While I think it is admirable for folks to want to help others and do good for the WHOLE COUNTRY, I don't feel this requires pledging allegiance to President O'Bama. I would like to think that the President of the United States serves us, the people, as well as the country, I'm not "okay" with the President of the United States wanting me to serve him...just not going to happen.
Another Democratic President, John F. Kennedy, said it best and kept the whole issue of service to the country in perspective: And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you?ask what you can do for your country."
A public service announcement/message should be just that, an announcement or message that serves the public, not serving the President. In fact, I was under the misconception that the President of the United States serves the people of the United States...wonder when that concept no longer applies?
I have no problem with President O'Bama doing his, so-called talk to the school kids of the United States. What I do have a problem with, is the President wanting the school kids of the United States to declare their allegiance to the man, not the country.
How about you? Do you pledge your allegiance to the United States of America or do you pledge your allegiance to President Barak O'Bama? Do you pledge your allegiance to both?
Where do I begin? The first blog post of many more to come? Let's see, I should introduce myself, I'm Elizabeth, known to my friends as Liza (with a long i and a "z," not an "s" sound). I'm a single (divorced) woman creeping into my 50s. I'm VERY comfortable in my skin and life. I enjoy meeting new people, I enjoy exploring new directions in life...let's see, what else?
Why am I here, on this site? I keep thinking there is a man out there that could actually be someone I could enjoy getting to know and spending some quality time. I believe that there is such a thing as complimenting another's life, not consuming but enhancing. Why not chronicle that exploration?
I enjoy writing...I find it a therapy of sorts...I also enjoy reading what other folks have written, food for thought and such.
Yes, hopefully the first of many more posts to come!
