Let me break this down for you Big Guy.

If you give your heart to your dolphin and the dolphin leaves you for some other dolphin you would be sad. If, however, you gave friendship to your dolphin and she sought other friendships you would feel happiness for her.

That's how the expression "can't we just be friends" originated.
