I think the one thing I've learned over the last few years is that you do not need to increase your cost of living just becuase you increased your salary. I know a lot of people who have gotten new jobs and imediately gone out and gotten a new car or some other horribly expensive item or items. I just can't justify it. I have to see that money coming in before I ever do anything extra with it. That goes as far as clothes, new toys, vacations, etc. I remember my first real job out of college . . oh man . . I'm making the money now. Working fulltime. I'm good. Then a few months later I realize that all this does is allow me to pay for basic necessities, and I wasn't one to run out and buy a new car or a new wardrobe. It simply allowed me to pay living expenses. I was devistated. I couldn't get ahead. The only solution was to change jobs. A 3-5% annual raise wasn't going to do much for me. It was going to keep up with inflation. Needless to say, you learn to look before you leap.
