I did some research.. A lot of bagpipe and Scottish jokes out there!!
Yes, to most, they sound HORRIBLE.. Hence, a "gentleman" might know how to do something annoying, but chooses not to! :)
(RMAC-- I didn't have to go listen BTW... nor could I ever date man in a kilt to begin with! It is rumoured the Irish gave the Scottish bagpipes as a joke! LOL)
Scottish man gets out of car and forgets to lock his door. He has a set of bagpipes in back for all the world to see... Comes back, there are TWO sets of pipes in the back!
They say you either love or hate them, but for me... I can handle a little bit of anything-- But I did choose NOT to youtube them!! ..
I like your comment JEN about not putting a woman in an embarrassing situation.
For me, a gentleman (on the suface) obviously opens doors, pulls out chairs, says yes mam and sir to at least the elderly.. However, what you stated JEN lies much deeper.
No woman wants to sit and squirm when a server brings the check, or desires to be put on the spot in any situation, or embarrassed in any manner. (I can't stand that!)
LULU- Unfortunately, even a gentleman must make a woman cry now and then.. Not all tears are bad, and sometimes painful tears are necessary...
HYPNOCHRIS, I don't think you are around anymore, but excellent response..
For me, the deeper meaning of a gentlemen would be the man who knows how to draw the line between "machoism" and "sensitivity." He knows the appropriate times to be sensitive, yet is also aware when he must help "reel me in" when my emotions might begin running amuck. (OH it happens!! LOL) But he does so in a calming, yet a strong enough manner to keep me in check. I am an emotional woman and know very well what my needs are at this point in my life. I would be lying to myself if I dismissed my "emotional ways." I can be a bit of a mess! :)
I am most attracted to tall, broad men. The men who are 6'2" and weigh over 100 lbs more than me. He adores my "cosmo" side while he orders a straight bourbon! If those type men "lose control" of their own emotions, it can get scary.... quickly... In order for a man to be a true gentleman, he must UNDERSTAND a woman's emotional needs, and he does not lose control of his temper, nor does he (seriously) make fun of a woman's sensitive side. A gentleman embraces the differences between man and woman and it is these precise differences he falls in love with!
When a huge man "gets" my sensitive side, there is nothing more "gentle-manly" in my eyes. I'd only cringe if he ordered an "apple tini!" Heehee
I do feel women are partly responsible for men losing their "gentleman" side... I've been on dates where the man has told me a woman has chewed him out for opening her door! I say women should embrace our femininity! Who cares if a man "thinks" he is the alpha, or the head.. The head moves nowhere without the neck attached! And a neck must have very strong muscles to hold up a head! :) JMHO....

Thanks LuLu for your feedback. 'A Gentleman is one who can play the bagpipes but doesn't"? Maybe it means -Even when he is full of hot air, he doesn't blow his ...top, pipes, whatever OR that he could totally brag about himself but doesn't. I think it seems more like my latter definition.
Quoting RealtorLulu:
The bagpipe idea I understood it to mean that:
A gentleman will know how to play the bagpipes but will respect the ears of those around. I guess the sound is an acquired taste.

One of the most important aspects of being a gentleman that I can mention on a dating site is to Follow Through with the lady that you've communicated with or had a date with, even if it is to say in a nice way that "You're not for me". Also a gentleman should not put a lady in an embarrassing situation.
OP, what do you mean by "'A Gentleman is one who can play the bagpipes but doesn't"? I've heard of tooting your own horn but not this.

Okay, I searched, there are several bagpipe videos, so what? I may like bagpipes music but it doesn't help me to understand the hidden meaning of what that saying means. I would have thought there was a definition for it and you were going to direct me to the Urban Dictionary or something.
OP posted "A Gentleman is one who can play the bagpipes but doesn't. " Hmmm. Guess it will have to remain a mystery as to what does it mean.

Re "'A Gentleman is one who can play the bagpipes but doesn't"
Google “UTUBE Bagpipes”
A few selections should show up.Listen to some of them.
You will maybe love it and not understand.
You will maybe hate it and understand completely.

HypnoChris...Great analogy. At last...we hear from a man who not only understands the true meaning of a 'Gentleman', but is articulate enough to paint their obscure boundaries with verbal colors that blend and enhance both a man's and a woman's unique needs in a relationship. Well stated!

Well stated!
A gentleman is a man who contemplates his actions, speaks softly and acts decisively. He understands the passions, virtues and frailties of himself and a woman, and as such, can circumscribe his passions and unleash hers, stand on his principles and virtues while cherishing and honoring hers, take responsibility for his short-comings while understanding and accepting hers. He is a man who values his honor and that of a woman. One who can celebrate the power, intelligence and independence of a woman, yet act in those lost chivalrous ways that also honor her gentle nature, her desire to be secure and her need to be valued. He does not boast and has no need for things to define him. He is modest and kind in deed and word yet fierce, and selfless if duty requires. He is what the world no longer values but women yearn for. He is no longer a naive, impulsive boy. He is a man forged on the anvil of honor, sacrifice and wisdom. He is as rare and valuable to his gender as the woman he desires. He waits quietly and confidently that his time will again come in the world.

Dictionary: a civilized, educated,sensitive,orwell-manneredman
Me: A man who will show respect even when tempted not to. Who is able to keep his cool when sorrounded by idiots. He will smile, nod and make small conversation just to make his woman look good.
