I used to be a member of a union when I first went into teaching but when I couldn't find work, I cancelled my membership. Despite having worked the last 2 years I've not got round to signing up again until today.

Today was a huge wake up call!!!

I can't obviously go into too many details but an allegation had been made against this lovely, great teacher who is due to retire this year. I have no doubt in mind that she has done anything wrong. I can't really comment any further on the matter.

So it put the fear of god into me this whole situation. Someone could say something. It's your word against there's and your whole career and reputation is torn down. So I signed up to a union tonight.

I can't imagine how that poor teacher must be feeling. To be told she had to leave and report to a police station. She must be distraught. She is such a kind and lovely woman. A really great teacher. Its such a shame her career is ending on this sour note.

It makes me realise as much as I love working with children, teaching lessons, things like this make you wonder how safe the profession is. I think if something like that happened to me, I'd leave and work with animals.

Such a sad day!

Good news for the teacher. Charges have been dropped and she returned to work. We are so glad to have her back.

Yes, unions do have their negative side. However, I think teachers need to have that protection incase things like this happen to them.

I agree with Roc, MMC. I think that workers still need protection. The workers are supposed to have charge of their collective destiny. The workplace is a more devicive place, from the sweatshop state that started the Union movement. The graft of corruption hits all phases ofthe workplace, including the administrators of the Unions. Between you as a teacher in this school, others, and events that have occurred with this child, That teacher should be exonerated of these allegations. I'm sure that multiple people have been interviewed concerning this matter. Our society is complicated at times, but the truth is made known. The Union may have supplied a Barrister, already. This kid's mother seems to be attempting to make this teacher subservient to her child's will. That never works with a teacher. You spoke highly of her, and, that Leoness cognative ability of yours knows.

This is bittersweet to a teacher about to retire. Most teachers put distance between very problem oriented children, And a more astringent school experience should be in this student's future, with psychological evaluation, that may indicate abnormalities in the family. Keep the faith with your P4 kids. 90% are good kids, wanting to learn, and are able to work positively with their teacher. You are teaching future minds.

How's the running going?    :-)LV1

Hi Sarah,

Sorry about what is happening to this teacher.  Unfortunitely bad things happen to good people. I just hope she gets some good support and representation. I'll keep her in my prayers.

As you already know, the best thing to to protect yourself as much as possible. Take care!
