So this term I am going to teach the children Scottish Country Dancing. It is something that I was taught at school and feel that should really be taught more today. It is after all part of Scottish traditions. My knowledge is quite patchy but after looking at some youtube  videos I'm remembering it now. It was a lot of fun back then so hopefully the kids will enjoy it.

So my plans are to teach the following dances:

Military Two Step

Strip the Willow

The Dashing White Sergeant

Gay Gordons

Should be fun! hehe

Sarah :-)

Hey Leon yes almost reaching the end my Scottish country dancing now. The kids have done so well picking up the moves. Not quite in time to the music but they are only in P4.  They've all enjoyed it which is good as I wanted it to be a fun experience for them. So hopefully in the future they will be able to use these skills at weddings, special events etc. keeping the tradition going.

Well so far we have mastered the Strip the Willow dance. The children really enjoyed it and it was quite an easy one to learn. We started the new dance last week-The Dashing White Sergeant which is all good until we get to the bit when the children need to move in a figure of eight which they can't do. So edited that part of the dance out until I can think how to teach it better. Showing examples on youtube. Maybe even getting some p7s to show the class an example  perhaps. Still all good fun. They are doing amazingly well as they are only in primary 4. Very proud of them!

Sarah, As a child back in Indiana we would attend the old fashioned barn square dance, I was just a wee lad but still to this day I can remember the fun we had. What your going to be teaching your kids will stay with them for a long long time. I just wish I could thank my teachers today for the fond memories.

Your going to have a blast!

I watched "The Dashing White Sergeant."  Looks like tons of fun, Sarah.  And kudos for you for doing your part to keep up Scottish traditions.  I'm sure the kids will enjoy it.

Quoting 3345roc:

Sarah,

I look forward to hearing and seeing more.  Is Scottish Country Dancing anything like Irish Step Dancing?  That was quite the craze here a few years back and hope this sort of dance makes it across the pond.

I would drop the Gay Gordon dance, however, as we've become obsessed with political correctness.

Its not like riverdance, its more movement and spins. You can view any of these dances on youtube. It actually a bit old fashioned here and it's only tends to be done in traditional settings or special events like a wedding, Burns Supper. etc.

We shall name it the Jolly Gordans then lol
