There is anecdotal evidence that sometimes bits of personality get translated along with the donor organ or part. This is more on the patient to surgeon discussion level. The patient is mystified on a new facet to her (his) personality and the surgeon says something like, “Yes that seems to sometimes happen, we don’t understand it, but yes that sometimes seems to happen.”
There are alternate explanations, as always.Sometimes, after very serious injuries, even though the patient completely recovers, their personality is permanently changed. No big mystery here, everything we experience affects our personality; sometimes just a little and more rarely sometimes a lot.
However, back to bits of personality transplanted along with the transplanted part. There is, or at least was, a little in the literature, else I would not know about it.
Actually, there is now quite a bit in the literature.A quick search this evening on the internet found several sources some quoting actual studies.

Yeah, DAK, that's the film. Frankenpenis, LOLOL!! No I haven't seen that one! You are so funny, LOL! Now this is life imitating fiction LOL!

Liv, I saw that film...I think. The transplanted hand kept killing people and the guy had no control over it. Or was that something different? Sometimes fiction imitates life... you see John Bobbitt got his "member" (re)-attached and he made a movie (Frankenpenis) and he had very little control over it either. :)

Hi BeWell – Since hand cells replicate from the hand cells themselves, I am not sure they will be 100% hers.I am totally outside any semblance of anything I know about, but still that is my understanding.I am perfectly willing to be wrong. In any case, it doesn’t matter if her body accepts them, and by that time her immune system will have made peace with them or they will have been long time rejected.
My daughter does know about this stuff -- I will ask her.

MissM........ Franken Fingers may be eerie, but WOW! It's so much better than that poor beautiful young woman not having any hands at all. What an amazing miracle it is for a double-hand transplant. I saw the story on TV. Still amazed by it.
Dakota........ Since I think it takes 7 years or so for all the human cells in one's body to regenerate, those living hands will be 100% hers in 2020! Isn't that a weird thought?
BeWell...;-D

SARAH... I think the reason it is so eerie to you is this...
We do heart, liver, kidnets, etc.. transplants EVERY DAY in the world...
BUT... we don't VISUALLY view this...
Being the limb is seen it makes it more difficult to accept for some.
I think it is AWESOME personally, but, it is a bit freaky..
And as CURIOUS stated.... The hand is actually a live limb. It has to have viable nerves to attach and make it work properly!
Thanks for the photo BEWELL!!!
HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT WEEK! :))))) Oh PAT... Your head remark reminds me of a Golden Girls episode.. remember when Rose had that dream all their heads were frozen!! Bwahahahaha!!!!
DAKOTA... YOUR HUMOUR IS JUST ON FIRE LATELY!!

You are soooo funny Dakota! Why??? LOL!!!
I once watched a film where a painist got a hand transplant from a murderer or strangler or something like that - long time ago can't remember the title of the film or any details per se. I think the whole idea is a little weird for my taste, Sarah.

Something is missing here. I see commentary on an issue, but no mention of the issue at all. However, I happen to know a bit about the issue, so it's not a total mystery.
If this "frankenfreak" surgery works for this woman, that will be grand.
As for imagining a "dead" hand attached, it couldn't have been totally "dead" when it was attached, or it would never work. And I would think that the recipient of this transplant will forever be grateful to her "doner" and not feel "wierd" at all. Just amazed and stunned and grateful. And maybe a mystical in ways she never felt before.
P.S.: Sarah, if you lost a hand and had a chance to have a replacement, at your age you probably would not give that chance up. 3 months later, you'd feel as though it was yours for sure. Yours and the grantees--and knowing you, you'd be giving thanks to the grantee and God once a day at least for it.
Quoting MissMonteCarlo:
I have to say I feel very backward on this matter. It seems so Frankenstein to me. Imagine having a dead hand attached. Not for me!!!
Sarah :-O
