I am trying to start an non-profit humane society in my town. There are no animal shelters and strays everywhere. I plan to not only help the abandoned animals but to educate the community about cruelty, dumping, and spay/neutering. If you have had any experience with this type of endeavor, I would love to hear any advice you may have for me.

I manage a large non-profit thrift shop in the DC burbs of Virginia. It's a thrift shop that I started in 1982 when everyone else said it wouldn't work. I formed a coalition of 4 organizations, filed to become a non profit 501(c)3. Fast forward to today: 13,000 sq ft and we will close this fiscal year at about $875,000 in sales. Yes, it can be done. Screw those who doubt you! Please let me know if I can be of any help. Judy

Thank you all for your words of encouragement! I hope I can make a difference in my community, isn't that what we are all here to do? To make a difference. Anyway, thanks again! ~Jessica

Best of luck to you. This may be my first/only ever commentary but I find your mission appealing. Anyway, I have only generalized advice b/c its been years since I did legal work for any non-profits. To really be successful (for 501c3/tax purposes and also for credibility factor raising money in your community) you'll want to assemble a board of respected folks (at least 3 to 5 and probably more) to help you run the organization. You'll still do lion's share of work, but you need to have a consultative body to help you govern. You'll also want some good (cheap!) legal advice out the gate -getting any biz up and running benefits tremendously if energy is put in at the front in with setting it up properly. If you are having trouble with legal contacts to help you set this up, try either your local Bar Foundation or the State Bar. Lawyers, especially big firms with stables of young associates, often provide many hours of pro bono (free) services to organizations such as yours. Anyway, I applaud what you are doing. I feel sentimental too about the role a beloved pet can pay in a person's life. My last of three very ancient cats died this week. She was about 20 years old and had a wonderful life. I wish all of us could live and breathe and 'have our being' in the way a good and loving pet can do . . . her living, and frankly, her dying, was a lesson to me and my sons on a lot of levels.
