Our friend WINDY is having an issue when she logs on to MM.
She LOGS IN----
Then her CHAT page pulls up, (She never uses chat, BTW) But, if she doesn't click out of it before it downloads, everything freezes up and she has to shut off her computer.
I recommended she DL a new browser. She contacted MM and they advised the same thing.
She DL Chrome and it deactivated Norton and it changed other settings.
ANY SUGGESTIONS? ANY CLUES?
H-E-L-P you computer geeks!!

That's frustrating! I didn't call them, I wrote them over a week ago and complained. They wrote me back and said it wasn't their system, it had to be mine. They said to exit it out every time the chat came up, that it would only interfere for a few minutes. That was their response to me.
At that point I decided to change my browser, which solved it. Now I'm having other issues because of changing my browser. My computer is old, I need to upgrade anyway or take this in and have a total makeover. After reading a few comments on here, buying a new one seems the better choice when you look at the cost factor.
PS, I intend to look into something you told me about, I've been extremely busy with my dad lately, which has been my priority, Thank you for thinking of me.

Thanks everyone. This is the first time since last Thursday morning I've been able to log on without the chat page coming up. I had called MM about the problem...twice...and the last time DL sent me an email suggesting another browser. Not thinking, I downloaded Bing. Didn't stop to think that's nothing but a search engine...not a browser. That really messed me up. Although they do have a version geared to XP...it not only took out my Norton but reset many of my tried and true setting. I was a bit ticked off at it...threw the machine in 'safe mode' and took everything 'Bing' out. I'm going to start a system restore before I leave to go out to the barn and set things back to where they were before the problem started.

According to MM, I'm the only person who has reported this problem, so maybe Hope posting this for me has encouraged others who have been subjected to the same thing happening to contact them and they fixed the problem. I was told no changes had been made to the chat program recently and they didn't know what could be causing it. Not that I know I'm not the only person, at least I'm confident it isn't my computer. That's some comfort. Just had a larger hard drive installed about 6 months ago and really don't want to put any more money into this computer when I'm planning on having the Geeks build me a new one this fall.

Thanks for your input. I have no idea how to block the chat feature. I had had a gentleman asking to meet me in chat the day this all started, but I didn't go on that page. Well...didn't go on intentionally, any way. That was when all of this started. Had to be a glitch in there somewhere. I left him a message on his profile comments that I didn't do chat and to contact me via email but the damn page just kept showing up.
How does one disable the chat page? I'm sure several of us would love to know.

It certainly does 'suck'. Since it's not doing that tonight, maybe the problem has been taken care of. I checked yesterday afternoon when I was talking to Hope and it was still doing it then, so whatever happened...I thank the person responsible for fixing the problem.
Welcome to the blogs. By the way...I'm with Hope and some of the others. Take it easy on some of us and join in on some of our blogs instead of trying to do so many posts yourself. It's far more fun that way. ;-)

There were no viruses on my computer when I got it back from the Geeks 6 months ago after having them install another hard drive for me. These guys are experts and they checked everything. As for the multi-virus programs...I've had several from the time I got my first computer in '04'...a Christmas gift from my nephew in California. Swore I'd never own one...he thought I would enjoy the research it afforded and sent it anyway. He was right...having the knowledge of the entire world at my fingertips is a humbling and awesome experience!
Anyway...back to the security thing. I have Norton, the Norton Root Cleaner, Malwarebytes, AdAware Personal and the Windows security system that runs with Norton from the time the machine is turned on until I shut it off. I do daily scans and, if I think I may have picked something up, run the scans that can be run without an Internet connection in 'safe mode'. I've found out, while trying to remove some programs that don't want to go, it's the only way to get all the hidden files off. If you know of anything else I should have done, please tell me. I have no guarantee it won't happen again and I like to have the information I need to use when I run into these irritating little issues. I don't, by the way, have Norton and Mallwalrebytes running at the same time. I was told they're incompatible.

Just hit delete for whatever you want to get rid of...then delete contents in the delete file. Is there another way that's easier?

Thank you for posting this for me. It's good to be able to log on without that bleepin' chat page freezing everything up. I'm still curious how and why it did that. Pretty bad when you have to shut down the entire computer just to get rid of one page on a web site that's never given me a minute's trouble.

Hope, I am using ESET NOD32 Antivirus and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.It all seems to work just fine.I am supposed to run M (launch it) about twice a week to do a full scan if I am on the computer a lot.A full scan is nowhere near as slow as Norton 360 used to be.ESET runs all the time.I can hand launch it, but presumable that should not be necessary.
Every time you plug in a new disk, or new USB stick ESET asks if you want to scan it.Sometimes yes.Sometimes with both.
I have heard the same thing as you re AVAST.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware seems common in a backup mode.
My pro friends change systems all the time.System of the month kind of thing. And they each will have different systems. They do work. They understand things better than I do.

UGH!! Now I am having issues with my Tri-Fi! I just posted and went to hit send and I was offline, though it shows I am ONline!! I HATE COMPUTERS!! AARRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!! **Throws stilettos across room!!
HI MTSUNNY!! Hope you are doing well! :) I felt the same and I have several browsers on my computer. Some sites do have compatibility issues, but I am inclined to think RMAC has a point. She has been having issues lately making me think she may have an undetected virus! I know I do! My laptop is driving me crazy!
HI DAKOTA! Hope life is treating you well! Sunds like an ideal solution! How do you turn off chat? Do you know? She never uses chat, so this should work. However, it sounds "too simple to be true!" Rarely do things work out that way!! LOL...
HI RMAC--- I have heard the same as you state--- To run a couple of programs at the same time. However, I have also heard that is not a good idea? Please enlighten me further. I have webroot currently, as PC Magazine rated them "top"-- but I did have Avast for free. BUT--- When the "free" subscription ran out, I started having "issues"-- Then when I tried to get it off my computer, I had issues. It is finally gone, but can they "mess" with the computer when you try to delete it? Or is my little blonde brain just being paranoid? And now my Sprint TRI-Spot is not staying connected!! It shows I am ONline--- BUT, I go to do something-- like my previous post that didn't make it B/C when I hit send, I got the white page showing I am NOT connected!! HELP!!
I swear... Computers are worse than men! CAN'T LIVE WITH THEM-- OR WITHOUT THEM!! Thanks for all your help EVERYONE!! SUGGESTIONS ENCOURAGED!! ;o)

In response to Rmac, he is correct. I use SpySweeper which is actually a good program. I also have Malwarebytes which I've used to remove one bad program that nothing else would remove.
The way I do it is, I use a program such as SpySweeper to run a scan. Then I quarantine the threat. If SpySweeper can't remove it, then I identify the threat by name and do a Google search for it. You are never going to be the only one that has had the problem so someone out there has found a solution. Sometimes there are programs especially written to remove certain treats, sometimes they have to be removed manually.
Once, I got a bad one...I was beating my brains out trying to figure out how to remove it. I identified it and the company that manufactured it...which happen to be in Canada. After getting very angry I decide to write the company a little anonymous email. I said something like this...I may be to dumb to remove this virus/spy/trojan you created but I'm going to drive up with my shotgun and put a stop to you ever creating another one. I didn't get the satisfaction of a reply from them. By the way, that was years ago and Malwarebytes was the only one that would remove it at the time.

You both might need to have your computer checked for viruses. Don’t say, I have xxxx anti-virus so I can’t have a virus.Sure you can.All anti-virus packages have vulnerabilities.
Most of my computer professional friends have two anti-virus packages running. One such as Avast as the main line of defense and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware sitting quietly checking everything you do or anything that is trying to come on board. That is just one example. Most of the time both are discreetly unobtrusive.Occasionally you will get a notice that something nasty had you under attack, but has been blocked.
Even so you can still get viruses.Unless you are expert at cleaning this stuff up, seek expert help.Rent-a–Geek cleaned an unreal batch of nasty stuff from a lady friend’s computer.I had Dell help me clean up my hard drive once. They cleaned out about 10 nasty malware of various sorts.Cost me about the same as a new computer of the same capability (it was 5 years old). So, if your computer has a bit of age you may just want to replace it.
Are your crucial documents (or whatever) backed up?If not can you live without them? That may get involved in your decision.
The place I purchased my last computer from was able to move all my stuff from my old hard drive without moving any malware. It only costs money.

SUGGESTIONS ENCOURAGED!! ;o)

Just block the chat feature from popping up in the browser. Apparently there is a conflict. You could ask MM if the Chat depends on client side or server side. If it's client side then it could be as simple as upgrading the client side application. Simple way is to just block it in the browser if she never uses it.

Had the same problem. I had to change my browser. I wonder what MM did that change the format? The chat pulling up every time I signed in, got very annoying, it takes so long to back out of it. Good Luck Windy.
