I wasn't able to verify this Letter to the Editor but I was able to verify that the 60 day quarantine is correct according to the Protocol for Importing Equine from Africa and several other countries on the USDA website.

Editor, Lewiston Morning Tribune:

If I wish to import a horse into the United States from Liberia or any African country other than Morocco, the horse needs to undergo a 60 day quarantine period at a USDA approved quarantine facility prior to mingling with the general population of horses in this country. Africa has a disease called African Horse Sickness that does not exist in the US; this is the way we have kept it out of this country. African Horse Sickness does not cause disease in people, only horses; our government has determined that it would be devastating to the US horse industry if it were to come here.

The United States (and virtually all other countries) require a myriad of tests and often quarantine prior to bringing in a foreign animal.

I can’t legally cross state lines in the United States with a horse or cow without a health certificate signed by a USDA accredited veterinarian stating that the animal has been inspected and found free of infectious disease. In most cases blood tests are also required. In fact I can’t legally cross the Snake River and ride my horse in Idaho without a health certificate and a negative blood test for Equine Infectious Anemia.

I’m not complaining; the United States of America, the States of Idaho and Washington as well as the other 48 states take the health of our livestock very seriously, and we have a very good record at keeping foreign animal diseases out of our country. I am happy to do my part to maintain biosecurity in our animal population.

If I am a resident of Liberia incubating Ebola, to enter the United States all I need to do is present a valid visa, and lie when asked if I have been exposed to Ebola. Within hours (no quarantine required) I can be walking the streets of any city in the United States.

I feel very fortunate to live in a country that values our animals so highly.

Here is an e-mail sent to Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune after an article he  published concerning a name change for the Washington  Redskins.

Dear Mr. Page...

I always love your articles and I generally agree with them. I would suggest, as in an email I received, they change the name to the "Foreskins" to better

represent  their community, paying tribute to the dick heads in Congress.

I agree with our Native American population. I am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name

a professional  football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must  be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of

political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward.

Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta  Braves and the Cleveland Indians.  If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins

makes  to skin color, then we need to  get rid of the Cleveland Browns.

The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. It's offensive to us white folk.

The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy?  No!  There is no room for any reference to that

tragic war that  cost this country so many young men's lives.

I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names.  Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints,

the Los  Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres. And of course the Los Angeles Dodgers is totally offensive to our taxation system.

Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings,

the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!

Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children.  The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even

spending habits.   Wrong message to our children.

The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children.

The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children.

The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying. Another wrong message to our children.

So, there you have it, Mr. Page.  We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become

involved with this issue, as they should.  Just the kind of thing our do-nothing Congress needs to keep busy.

As a diehard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State

women's athletic teams to something other than "the Beavers."

Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House.

One is from Chicago, another is from Kentucky, and the third is from New Orleans.

All three go with a White House official to examine the fence.

The New Orleans contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil.
"Well," he says, "I figure the job will run about $9,000.  That's $4,000 for materials, $4,000 for my crew and $1,000 profit for me."

The Kentucky contractor  also does some measuring and figuring, then says, "I can do this job for $7,000.  That's $3,000 for materials, $3,000 for my crew and $1,000 profit for me."

The Chicago contractor  doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and  whispers, "$27,000."  The official, incredulous, says, "You didn't even measure like the other guys. How did you come up with such a high figure?"

"The Chicago contractor whispers back, "$10,000 for me, $10,000 for you, and we hire the guy from Kentucky to fix the fence."

"Done!" replies the government official.

And that, my friends, is how the Government Stimulus plan worked.

Leo,

I'm sorry....not trying to ignore you.  I've just been so overwhelmed with this whole house for sale business.  I've done a total kitchen remodel and replaced all the windows on the front and side of the house.  After work, I spend the rest of the night calking and painting.  Progress is slow.

I've been intending to write a response to you but just haven't been able to sit down long enough to do it.  The only thing I can say is the Republicans have nothing to run on except the exploitation of Ebola and Isis....and FEAR.  If people vote for the "Stupid Party"....the one with no policy ideas or belief in fairness, justice and science...then we truly will have something to be afraid of when the planet doesn't just fry, but bursts into flames!!!

PS:  I think it's pretty hilarious the first thing Gov Rick *Succeed* Perry did was call out for the Government to come HELP Texas, when the private, for-profit hospital quite obviously didn't have a clue what to do with the first case of Ebola in the US.  That's about right:   "Sorry, just kidding....we really do want you!!!  Maybe it was a mistake to strip funding from government agencies weakening their ability to effectively manage a crisis like Ebola.  Maybe we'll even consider confirming a Surgeon General now too!"  We're lucky only two nurse caught it so far.  You can not trust a for profit driven company to make the right choices for its workers unless the government regulation requires them to do so.  When AIDS first came out, I was a nurse on a hospital floor.  The Administrator told us gloves were too expensive to be used for every patient contact.....so we didn't have them!  In many cases we cared for and cleaned patients with bare hands and no protective gowns. Not until the CDC came out with the Universal Percautions regulation did we get them.  Now gloves are ubiquitous.

This is just the beginning if we let the "Stupid Party" continue to cause dysfunction, confusion and distain.  There is only one party, while not perfect by a long shot that wants government to work...and that's the Democrat Party.  My politics are simple.  I am against anything that kills people or hurts the planet.  We CAN do right and just things!  Rich people will still be rich!!  Greed and malice is the real sickness that is ruining this country!

It would seem, in these fly-by days, till Nov 7th, Those Federal Level, Demo. Candidates, are walking back to Obama. Not only, does this Create New Party Unity; They got over the Low Popularity Numbers of 2013(Shutdown). He has risen from that low, of 25 to an over 43% rating. These numbers are reflective of the Millinium Gen.; A larger pool, to the Baby Boomers. They like this action. They try hard not to be jaded, by this Reality Show of GOV'T.  That 50%, Romney sloffed off, was Them. They are more leaning to a Demo. for President, due to Obama's Directives.

Obamas numbers went up, when He started Legally Directing. The Rep's still are blind, to these numbers, and their meaning.

We learned from Reagan, How to get along with a ruling, DEMO. Congress(Tip O' Neil). Why did not, the 48 learn Cooperation? That's what it's all about, Sports Fans, and SCORP"RN"CS's!   ///LV1\\\

Let's spin this USSC Charge against Amazon. Overtime, after you clock out, is in the balance. For those not aware; Service Industry has been in Temporary Employment Agency mode for 6 years(2009). One must bring the 5th Amendment in to the conversation, now(Liberty, Property, and inocense). Amazon charges employees to stand in line, for search, without compensation. Look for the NLRB to weigh in!

The funny thing of this situation, is, where is the right going to spend there Propaganda money to buy popularity on Twitter,FB. Is not the winner; The one who goes Viral in 2016. The Right needs to look at how viral-Vial they want Love potion #2016 to be.

Can the Republicans improve on the Surpluses of Obama, and how? We are in an air war now, but need more elite teams to do what Americans call justice to the Constitution, worldwide. To stop aggression in thwe world would require over 200 million fanatics, and Terrorist be neutralized, in some fashion. If you don't kill them, you house them. Where? JUS'SAYINLV1(-B///

We have agreed in the past that reform is needed.  Not only do we need to get big money out of politics but we also have to get rid of the career politicians like Biden.  He's spent 90% of his adult life as a politician and the other 10% dodging the Vietnam draft.  Election Finance reform and term limits might require a Constitutional Amendment but it's feckless to expect those who enjoy these perks to vote to get rid of them.  Leadership PACS are just plain bribery as is lobbying.

For the short period of time that Rome was a Republic, Senators were chose via lottery, maybe that would work.

Money for political campaigns is mostly spent for TV ads.  I've long wondered why, if those airwaves truly are public, should anyone have to pay private companies to use them for such a purpose.  Buying back use of putatively public airwaves for a process that is the quiddity of maintaining the society we choose.

Why doesn't government have it's own tax-funded broadcast channels?  They could be made accessible to citizens free of charge, but only if the programming would appeal to the general public.  This method would actually remove the money completely from the equation.

What people tend to forget is what is attached to these bills. Both sides are guilty of this. They all want to stay in power and be in control.

We need term limits but who in the hell in Washington will vote for that?

And yes I watch Fox!

I hope that nuance of "political theater" didn't go unnoticed.  This was a political stunt by the Dems to bolster their mid-term media blitz and it seems you bought it.   A Constitutional Amendment requires 67 Senators and two thirds of the House and then has to be ratified by 38 States.  Remember the ERA?  I doubt that 2/3rds of this  Clown Congress could agree on what day of the week it is.
