In light of the horrific event which occurred in Aurora, Colorado, I remain in a state of shock and sadness surrounding this tragedy as I begin to process through how it has affected me. It is hard for me to wrap my mind around this. I found myself having to turn off the news yesterday because of the media feeding frenzy which is now occurring.

On one of my face book pages yesterday I found myself immediately joined in a group supporting a death sentence for the killer. A discussion arose from a comment I made about feeling it was inappropriate that Mitt Romney's statement about the event be presented alongside President Obama's in a seemingly "tit for tat" grab for air time during this campaign season. Though I do not agree with most of Mr. Obama's policies, it is still appropriate that he as the elected President of the United States of America address this grievous episode with which our entire country and world must contend and not so, in the very same breath, for his opponent who has never been a Colorado official nor resident.

One woman, who commented on my post, suggested that I don't blame Romney because "all kinds of public figures" were being asked by the media for their comments and that he was just one of the many who were being asked to share their view. I challenged the comment by stating that the other public figures weren’t featured immediately after President Obama’s statement, aren't running for office nor were their statements framed from behind a podium with the American flag hanging in the background. During his statement, Romney said he was laying aside his campaign, and appeared in “casual/professional” as he looked down to read the words from a statement obviously pre-prepared by someone else; words carefully selected for ratings, I'm sure.

In reflection I know that this woman is right and that although my point is well taken, the more important conclusion I came to as a result of the exchange with her, is the acknowledgement that, once again, my tendency has shown up to attempt to transform my most uncomfortable feelings into more palatable ones; such as anger. The truth is that I am so sad that this happened and scared it could have been me or that could have been my son in the Century Theater. We had just gone to the theater ourselves the night before to see Spiderman and were looking forward to the new Batman coming out yesterday.  I have such heartache about this and I am so shaken by it that I'm not sure what to do with this sense of such an assault to our collective soul by this obvious evil.

There are some events which occur in our lives which touch us in such a way that the moment they come into our life's bubble, they seem to leave an indelible mark on our very essence. We will remember the time of day, where we were, what we were doing and the sense of surreal when we heard of this unthinkable event the evil of which seems to weigh more than our hearts can process or minds imagine. In the past when I have encountered tragic events in my own life, a defense mechanisms sets in which arises to help me survive through the experience and continue on without the immediate sting of it's presence. This built in process seems necessary so we can survive our stories despite the mark or scar which often remain.

Murder brings so much up for me as I was affected by such an evil as a young child. As just a little girl, I was a victim of sexual abuse, molestation and rape the perpetrators of which were surrounded by a murder/suicide. Though I am clear about this not being true now, the child within me had internalized a mistruth that I had some part in causing it to happen. Even though I was only four years old when this happened, the effects this had on my life were devastating. As a result, I practiced dishonesty and mistrust of others, the fruit of which kept me spun in a continued pattern of self sabotage and refusal to accept love.

As I got older I learned to hide that hurt little girl, partly to protect her but most of all because the devastation she experienced made her too needy and dirty to deal with so I just shut her away and tried to forget about her. I guess events like this one in Colorado bring her to mind because sometimes she still gets so terribly scared of this world; and rightly so. It is scary and evil does exist and bad things do happen to good people for no apparent or justifiable reason. I ask myself; what shall I do with this sense of powerlessness I feel over these kinds of events over which I have no control? I suppose the answer is to practice acceptance. I must accept that evil exists and that its nature is to steal, kill and destroy. That is it's nature; it's just what it does. That does not mean I have to like it or that I must embrace it. In fact I hate it.

It brings tears to my eyes to try and imagine, the Christmas mornings and other holdiays these families will have without one that was stolen from them. I ponder in my heart of all of the missed birthdays and phone calls, first dates and tender moments, bed time stories and first kicks of the unborn never be felt by ones that might have become mothers. These and countless more "life moments" have all beem savagely torn away from these people by someone who was a channel for evil; the loss of which (make our lives worth living), not even the death penalty could satisfy.

A friend of mine called me yesterday and wanted to know if I would go see the movie with her. I found myself in a bit of judgment of her because of the part of me that can be so sanctimonious and declined. What I must realize is that we all subject to the web of sensationalism so paramount through what Michael Savage calls the fifth pillar; media. Allowing ourselves to be taken in by media to the point that we become pawns to its agenda instead of going within an finding a place of solitude in which we may be comforted and begin to heal.

BTW,  Arakalee, McKay is an old family name of mine.  Scottish.  Pronounced by the clan as "McKie."

Any relatives in Canada, specifically in a place once called "Murphy Province" or "Murphy Borough?" or "Murphy Township?"  In Ontario.

Sarah, one quick note:  Where I live, if I were lying on my living room couch reading a book and I suddenly heard an intruder trying to break in my living room window--he was out there, on my second floor porch in a ski mask, and obviously armed let's say.

Am I supposed to call the cops and wait for them to arrive?

Sarah, if I called the cops, where I live, even if they then drove to my home at 90 miles an hour it would be a minimum of 30 minutes before they reached my home.  A minimum!!!

During those 30 minutes what am I supposed to do?  Hide in my bathroom with the door locked?  Shout at the intruder to leave because he has no right to try to rob me or rape me?  Throw one or more of my cast iron skillets at him as he comes through my living room window?

Sarah, even in NYC, where most folks live within minutes of a police precinct, if an intruder intent on theft or harm or both is at your window, at your front door, he's going to get in to your home a good 5 or 10 minutes before the cops arrive to rescue you.  And during those 5 or 10 minutes, you could very well wind up dead if you don't have gun to shoot that felonious bastard with and render him harmless to you.

That's reality, Sarah.  That's how it works.  Maybe in your lovely hometown in Scotland you dont' have to worry about such kinds of crime.  But so very much of the rest of the western world does have to worry about such crime.  That's just the facts, Sarah.  Just the facts.

So I must disagree with you 100% about only the cops having guns because the cops are simply not always there when their guns are needed most.

This is a tough one indeed.  I can only imagine that the loved ones of the people who died in this horrific tragedy are mad as hell and want to see the perpetrator either behind bars or put to death ASAP.  Not to mention those who would like to see him tortured severely for several years before succumbing to the effects of said torture.

The problem with that is that it's beginning to look as though as though this perpetrator is one of those relatively rare schizophrenics who eventually turns wacko violent.  The jury surely isn't in on this one yet, and it may very well turn out that he's not schizophrenic.

But if he is, if when all the facts are out and we can all be sure he is schizophrenic, then Christian compassion must not go out to only the victims of his horrific act and their loved ones, and all the lives his horrific act will have changed forever, but Christian compassion must go out to him as well.

And, if it turns out that he is schizophrenic, then I, for one, would wish that, instead of our politicians and activists being inspired to focus all their energy on more gun control, they would be inspried to focus energy on more research into this devastating disease of schizophrenia that has, and continues to, ruin not only the lives of the many, many people afflicted with it [usually in late teens or early 20's] but the lives of everyone around the afflicted.

Schizophrenics cannot be held accountable for their actions, by the way.  The huge mess in their brains renders them incapable of rational and sane judgment--even for the majority who never become violent.   This disease is at least as devastating to the person afflicted as Alzheimer's is.  And understanding it, treating it effectively--all still remains mostly a mystery to even the most brilliant minds working on it currently.

Sarah,

Guns are important and I wish the UK was different. For that same reason, I am really, really sad about the state of affairs of UK laws.

UK - a country where a burglar has a right to burgle your home, but you have no right to protect yourself. If you do, you go to jail. A man who was subjected to series of burglaries in his farmhouse in Norfolk, UK losing thousands of pounds, the Police being unable to protect him was convicted of murder when he shot one of the burglars. His conviction was reduced to manslaughter on appeal after he provided evidence that he is a mad man - paranoid personality disorder specifically directed at someone entering his home - that is laughable because he was not mad, he did what he had to do to defend himself, but British justice sends him to prison for life with a min 10 year term until he had to lie that he was a mad man and his verdict was overturned to manslaughter]. Tony Martin - 20 August 1999.

UK - A country where another farmer who was subjected to vandalism from youthful hoodlums was constantly told by the Police that they would not arrest the youths involved because they were never caught red-handed, because by the time they arrive at the farm, the boys had ran away but leaving serious damage in their wake. On an incident, the farmer caught one of the boys and called the Police. This time, the Police arrived and met the youth who was one of the gang that had been terrorising the farmer and had caused him considerable damage and trauma - The Police turned right around and arrested the farmer and sent the boy home! The farmer's offence is that he had unlawfully imprisoned the youth! When the youth had fled, the farmer was told he had no evidence, when he stopped one of the boys from running away, he was arrested for false imprisonment.

UK - A country where a celebrity lady at home alone with her baby was given a serious warning by the Police for waving a kitchen knife through her window to scare away burglars who had gained entrance into her premises and were trying to break into her shed! Myleene Klass - Jan 2010.

UK - A country, where a rapist is allowed to intrude into a home and rape the women and make the men watch - if the men try to defend the honour of their women - they go to jail, but the intruder/rapist is not prosecuted!

UK - A country that allows 2 young men who deliberately dazzled an air-ambulance pilot with lazer to prevent him from picking a heart attack victim to the hospital in order to save his life walk free from court despite being directly responsible for preventing the man from getting life-saving medical intervention. The man died - the 2 men walked free from court! - Alex Cox and Luke Fortune aged 21 - March 15th 2012.

UK - A country where paedophiles have more 'Human Rights' than their little victims! Too numerous but will cite just one - Shawn Sullivan - June 28th 2012 - one of America's most wanted paedophile being protected by the UK judiciary.

I could have posted links to case laws of real cases as above, but I don't know if MM will let me post these links. So I have settled for case names.

The majority of the UK agrees that our laws need to change - victims should not be incapacitated and silenced and bullied into acquiesance whilst perpetrators are empowered - that is what the UK law provides for sadly. I have worked shocking cases upon cases - that give me sleepless nights!

This is Sarah Smith the British woman protecting the American paedophile Shawn Sullivan who wanted in the US for crimes against children, but shielded by the UK government from extradiction to the US to face trial for his crimes. The UK judges are quoting grounds of his Human Rights - what about the Human Rights of the children he destroyed? Whilst he was on the run in Ireland he raped more children there! When a person commits vile inhuman acts against children, he ceases to be Human and therefore should have no Human Rights - the victims should!

Guns should be allowed in the UK so we too can protect our lives and properties. Sarah, don'y forget - just that guns are not legal does not mean your jackass neighbour cannot get his hands on one if he really wants to! Haven't heard of guns from the black market and the internet?

My heart goes out to all those who lost their lives in Colorado and their families!

Liv.

SARAH....

Please understand this is my "heart" speaking to you.. and is NOT meant to offend you in any manner.. You know I adore you and for the life of me... your "naivety" and "sweetness" are qualities I admire in you.. But sometimes your "gentleness" overwhelms me... :)

Sarah, honey.. Please hear me out.. (And I KNOW how horrible these tragedies are!)

The bulk of PEOPLE that are killing others .. NOTE TO ALL:::: PEOPLE KILL... They use guns, knives, cars, bats, clubs, rocks...WHATEVER THEY CAN FIND!!

The MAJORITY of PEOPLE WHO KILL.... do NOT purchase their weapons legally...

GUNS ARE LIKE DRUGS AND THE ONES SEEKING THEM WILL ALWAYS FIND THEM!!

That is THOUGHT #1.... So I ask... What purpose does it serve to take away LEGAL WEAPONS?

THOUGHT #2... COPS ONLY.... I'm sorry.. but just as there are "good waitresses and bad waitresses" .. there are Cops who are professionals.. and cops who are horrible people... Just watched a movie on Lifeime about a Canadian Colonel in Air Force.. He was a rapist and murderer.. A badge doesn't make a man "good" ... anymore than a suit makes a man a gentleman... or a dress makes a female a "lady."

THOUGHT #3... The United States of America was founded on our Constitution which declares all men have undeniable "rights"... One of these "rights" is the "Right to Bear Arms" (Amendment II)

Sarah, It's kind of like this... You have 2 children playing.. One is a bully.. He takes the lego and hits the other child with it. You take the lego away.. DOES THIS MAKE THE CHILD SUDDENLY TURN NICE? No...  He finds something else to inflict the pain with..

GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE...

PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE...

Makes you wonder how crazy is it that an individual can get their hands on these kind of weapons so easily. Whats in place to stop another person doing exactly the same thing?

I know people will disagree with me on this as this is the culture t hey've been brought up in owning guns  to defend their property but I believe the police should be the only people allowed access to guns. I don't believe for most people that they live in areas that are so dangerous that warrants them the need for a gun. I bet for most people they've never had the need. My uncle who live is south africa has a gun beside his bed because where he lives there is a real danger and over there they kill then rob you as it means nothing. I don't think most peoples towns are on par with the level of violence in south africa. Well would hope not so to me does not justify gun ownership.

Seems like these occurance happen all to often. Too many guns, too many crazy people and not enough regulation. Will it ever change?

For that reason I am glad to live in the UK. I feel safer knowing a jack ass neighbour has no gun in his house. lol Actually thinking of my town if they all had guns in some of the areas it would be terrible. Those areas would be like a a complete danger zone just for the fact they'd have guns. If someone has a knife at least you could run if someone has a gun pointing at you there is no escape.
Sarah
